The Birmingham-born star, best known as a vocalist with The Beat, died at home on Tuesday, surrounded by family, a statement on the band's website said.

Charlery had suffered a stroke last summer and was reported to have been diagnosed with two brain tumours and lung cancer in recent months.

Tweeting condolences, songwriter Billy Bragg wrote: "Rest easy, Rude Boy."

Singer Sting, who did many live performances and recordings with Charlery, posted a statement of tribute on Instagram.

I went to school with Dave Wakeling, who was the lead singer of the Beat. I haven't heard any comment from him.

Really decent band, they visited my town a few times in the last couple of years. RIP

That's sad. As you say Chippy way too young. That's how old I am at least for the next few weeks.
I only saw them once as they weren't really my thing.
I remember seeing The Pogues in Birmingham once and a few guests came up on stage.
They were all introduced apart from him. One of The Pogues had to ask who he was
and then rolled his eyes at the name.
Strange how something like that sticks in your brain after all those years.
