    Forum Raffle

Generally, the only organisations given a "free pass" to operate a paid for raffle/draw are registered charities. Any commercial organisation, which is what THBF is, requires a licence and a legally appointed auditor to validate results and ensure against fraud. As the membership are members of...

    What's your music taste like?

Lots of classical, Afro Celt Sound System, Beth Orton, Chillout music, 80s - I'll listen to pretty much anything, so long as it isn't (C)Rap music - it hurts my brain and ears. If I'm in the need to put a smile on my face, then I turn to Half Man Half Biscuit - those that know of them will...

    Bottle rinsers

I use a bottle rinser and they are superb, HOWEVER.... If you use Coopers PET bottles, the neck is too wide and slides over the pump action of the rinser. I remedied this by removing the centre of an old CD and slipping that over the pump to act as a washer.

Better tap option for budget barrels?

Standard pressure barrel taps also rotate within the body - Young's do one that cost's about £5 and can withstand the pressure of a keg. If your bottling bucket has a little bottler attached, then it's a proprietary tap - if it hasn't, then the Young's tap should suffice for that purpose as...

What's the most vile thing you have brewed?

Can't say I've produced anything vile, but my most disappointing kit was the Evil Dog Double IPA which was very poor. Considering these kits are circa £25 I would have expected better. My crab, peanut, marmite and honey porter on the other hand, is a thing of beauty... FatCol

My first brew with coopers euro lager

When you say "put it in a cask" what are you referring to? If you mean a pressure barrel, then I'd advise against it, as it won't hold sufficient pressure to give a properly carbonated lager. If it's a corny, then that's fine. I barrel certain ales but always bottle lagers for the reason...

    Fermenting Vessels - Lifespan

I have several vessels that are a few years old and I use them for beers, wines, TC etc. I don't keep vessels for a specific type of brewing, because if they are cleaned using something like VWP, then there isn't any taste or smell transfer. I think the thing to really watch out for is...

    Plastic Demijohn

If the wine is visibly fermenting, then I wouldn't worry, as the creation of CO2 within the demijohn will prevent any nasties getting into it, as it creates a positive pressure. The plastic ones can be temperamental so I'd just give everything a good tighten up and twist and push down slightly...

Better tap option for budget barrels?

I hadn't considered the notion of a reducing thread. Does that mean I'm stuck with rubbish taps, or can anyone offer an alternative solution?
