Elderflower champagne - To boil or not to boil?

My old laptop died taking all my recipes with it. I Think it was something like 12 heads, zest of 5 lemons and juice of two, 1.5 lb of sugar in 5l of water (which when made in 15l batches strained and filled a 3gal carbouy, and then 3x demi johns after the primary). But I definitely boiled it...

    How to clear Starsan

I've noticed it clearing when used in airlocks also. Carboxylic acid is pretty weak compared to phosphoric acid so I agree its unlikely that its replacing that in the salt (its a salt not a soap surely or have I missed something), but by further lowering the solutions pH it will be helping to...

Angel Homebrew Brew Devil - First Brew Review.

Thanks, didn't know that group existed, that sort of info is what would have made the day go a bit smoother! Although apparently the group admin has a habit if banning anyone who finds a negative with the microbrewery so maybe I won't be welcome!

    Madaleine McCann

She wasn't kidnapped though was she, or rather the mum and kidnapper turned out to be the same person. Kids are taken into care for their benefit if they're in some sort of danger, not punitively because the parents did something wrong. If social services believed they were going to leave the...

    GrainFather bottled beer problem.

I'm in the camp that doesn't believe in it, I don't think any of the commercial brewing journals have found evidence of it, and quite a few home brewers have tried to deliberately cause it by adding oxygen at every step and not observed any effect (other than the yeast getting going quicker).

The crime would be in portugal, so not a UK decision, and I suspect that on balance they didn't want the fallout of the Daily mail screaming about foreign police picking on middle class brits. Even in this country I doubt you'd get a prosecution though, the CPS would say it wasn't in the public...

Moving onto all grain - some help please

I got a brewdevil and plate chiller a couple of weeks ago, managed a brewday where the only mess was cooling water on the floor (and I've a solution to that for next time). Cleaning was easy, scrape out the bulk of the mess, take the bazooka out, pour the cooling water (now hot) into the...

    The Hard Shoulder.

The problem is, that if attitudes like Gunge's, and Thumpers belief that cyclists are regularly hospitalising pedestrians aren't challenged then you end up in a situation where people genuinely believe that 'cyclists' are a problem and that something must be done about it. You then end up with...

    GrainFather bottled beer problem.

There's a different issue called hot side aeration which is getting oxygen in the wort whilst it's still hot, which theoretically produces some oxygenated compounds which then break down over a long period of time and ruin your beer. There are two types of brewers, those that have read about it...

Apart from not killing them by either blunt force, particulates, NOx, hydrocarbons, other carcinogens, obesity, the manufacturing process, the expense and tax required to cater for them, and all the other ways cars do their best to mess things up for my fellow citizens? So far we've got a...

Angel Homebrew Brew Devil - First Brew Review.

Just had a look and it's £344 where the grain father is £675. Bear in mind the grain father comes with a chiller though. It wasn't meant as a negative review, with better instructions it would be on a par with the more expensive options in my opinion. There's corners cut but unless you have...

Angel Homebrew Brew Devil - First Brew Review.

It's really good, apart from the lack of guidance really. The grainfather has a formula something like 2.7x grain bill + 3.5 = strike water and similar for sparge water. Once I've figured that out next time it'll be straightforward. It was just frustrating at the time. For what is quite an...

Angel Homebrew Brew Devil - First Brew Review.

A bit of a follow up on this thread; https://www.thehomebrewforum.co.uk/threads/the-postmans-been.76583/ It's the same basic brewer as a few companies have released with their own branding now, apparently, this version now has a memory function which makes programming easier, I didn't test this...

    The Hard Shoulder.

I can imagine it, but to re-iterate it simply isn't bore out by reality. Cars kill on average 9 pedestrians a day, bikes about 2 a year in the UK, and that includes the recent high profile case. If you can find a statistic that shows significantly more victims of bike/pedestrian collisions then...

    The Hard Shoulder.

Fair point, although I'd counter by pointing out that the average motorist treats the amber as 'floor it before it goes red' and I actually got sworn at the other day for crossing (green man flashing) as it was holding up MrAudi who thought the flashing amber meant he should go. And obviously...

Are e-bikes the way forward in London?

My parents have a pair of trek Powerfly hardtails, they are a lot of fun up hills. The 15mph limit isn't a huge issue as although they weigh a lot so going over it without assistance is difficult unless going down a steep hill it's enough to go faster than average on the flats. I commute a few...

    The Hard Shoulder.

As a regular cyclist can I point out that (statistically) more people were killed by cars* before breakfast this morning than were killed by cyclists in a year. And that is without apportioning blame (just the total number of deaths resulting from cyclist/pedestrian collisions). *which is...

    Mashtun drainage/filter vs efficiency

As long as it's consistent it's not the end of the world, a 10% jump in efficiency might cost/save you £1 in grain, its not like a commercial brewery where 1% is costing £100s Or £1000s in grain and power. My mash tun is round with a slightly undersized round false bottom, the logic behind that...

    Does this look like sabotage?

We need the whole back story too, let's be honest the story behind sabotage is far more interesting than discussions about failure modes of rotomolded plastic! For the discussion, I don't think it would fail on the seam, they're not made in halves and glued, the seam is just where the halves of...

The weaker the beer, the longer the sparge.

If the flow through the bed is too quick it pushes the grain down onto the filter and compacts it. Once compacted the flow stops almost entirely. The aim is to have just enough flow to extract the sugars (and not take forever doing it) but not so much that it gets stuck. In a normal setup I do...
