    Digital thermometer recommendation

My digi thermometer (no brand Chinese thing) takes an absolute age to read temperature. Like a few mins. Zzzzzzzz.... So, can anyone recommend a digi thermometer that reads quickly, has a reputation for accuracy, and bonus points if fairly common so I can be a tight **** and look out for a...

    Mybrewbot - any users?

I'm looking at a Mybrewbot to provide some level of automation and logging to my brewery. Does anyone here have experience of owning one who can offer any words of wisdom? How well does it integrate with Brewfather, for instance?

    Help sexing hop

I was given this hop plant earlier this year and it's growing well, but I'm not sure from the online descriptions if the plant is female (hurrah!) or male (booo!) Can any growers advise?

Anyone brewing a coronation ale tomorrow?

I appreciate that most people are organised and brew an ale *for* an event like this, but I'm not, so I'll be brewing an old Victorian Keeping ale recipe on the Coronation. Anyone else?

Burco power controller - can it be this simple?

I would like to be able to turn the power down on my Burco Cygnet, as 6 (full power) is really, really vigorous and 5 doesn't even simmer. If I got it up to boil, could I then plug one of these in to control the power, or will I die in a ball of Chinese shoddy build flames? Seems a really...

    Thermowell for inkbird probe

I hadn't realised that inkbird temperature probes weren't food safe. Oops. So, while I await my second head to grow, will they fit into these thermowells does anyone know? Seems a great price, which is handy as I will need 4! Bulkhead 4" Thermowell

    Homebargains - Young's & Fullers

Just been into Homebargains in Grimsby and they have good stocks of bottle conditioned Young's London Special Ale - don't know of this interests anyone for attempting to cultivate the yeast. £1.69 a bottle. They also have Fullers Old Winter Ale for 99p a bottle. It's not bottle conditioned but...

Cleaning cornie kegs with thin bleach

As above, I want to deep clean a couple of cornies. When I do this with plastic fv's, I clean them with oxy, then hit them with thin bleach solution, then a campden solution to remove any remaining bleach taint, then dry. When I want to use them, I just hit them with a videne no rinse solution...

    Ind Coope film

Don't think I've seen this posted here before, apologies if it has. An Ind Coope promo film. Really interesting.

Coronation Ale - Anyone thinking of brewing one?

As per the title really, anyone else thinking of brewing a strong Coronation Ale for putting down? I understand the coronation won't be until next year sometime so there is a decent amount of time to get one down. I'm thinking of adapting a historical keeping ale recipe.

    Pubs in Cardiff

Looks like I'm having to stay in Cardiff tonight for work, probably at the Travelodge Whitchurch. Any forum members recommend a pub within walking distance where I can sit in the corner, crying into a pint of real ale wishing I was at home with my brewing gear family?

    Home brewing win win

So, went for breakfast this morning after dropping the youngest off for her 11 plus tutoring. But of a hangover from homebrew, and me and the lovely wife decided to pop a bet on the Grand National. Saw a horse with Yeast in its name, and bunged a couple of quid on it. Then realised it was...

Finings for hop debris - Magicol or Gelatine?

My last brew day was a bit of a calamity. It was the first run out for my stainless mash tun made from a thermopot. That went well. What didn't go so well was the replacement tap on my burco boiler - a 1/2" ball valve from my old cool box mash tun, combined with a 100g hop stand whole hop...

    Underletting & foundation liquor

For those of you who mash in using an underlet, and have a false bottom, do you add foundation liquor to the level of the false bottom and then add the grains to the mash tun then underlet, or just add the grains to an empty tun and underlet the full required liquor volume? If you do the latter...

    Recommended FVs?

I need a couple of new FVs as the two I use, which I got from the range, have given up the ghost. I never really liked them, the lid and to of the FV seemed to have lots of nooks and crannies for things to hide in, and the lids have cracked around the circumference quite quickly. So what do...

Manifold - tails to JG fittings

I've got a 4 way gas manifold like the one in the picture below. Is it possible to unscrew and remove the tails, and replace them with some kind of John Guest fitting, or do I need to buy one already like that?

    Golden Syrup origins

This post is probably of interest to nobody but me, but I thought I'd share it. The use of Golden Syrup in place of either brewers invert syrup or Candi syrup is well established, and the making at home of the various grades of either by heating or mixing with molasses has been covered before...

    Cutting holes in stainless

I need to cut some large holes in my thermopot to for the bottom drain. Smaller holes, for all the 1/2" stuff I've got covered by a qmax cutter. So, what kind of holesaw blade do I need? Will a bi metal one be too soft; do I need some kind of carbide blade? Do I need special drill bits to...

    Badger Tanglefoot - dark?

I love Tanglefoot, it's a beer I would love to emulate. However, I'm reading Mike Dunn's "Local Brew" (1986) and he describes Tanglefoot as "a fairly dark strong bitter which still retains a noticeably hoppy palate" Just out of interest, did it use to be darker than it is these days?

Wheeler's BYOBRA - Is this all the editions available?

I'm looking to collect all the editions of Graham's British Real Ale books, and I *think* this is it? (baring the latest one which I understand he had little to no involvement in, and disowned to some extent). Or are there others?
