    Metallic taste

Hi, I have just fermented a more highly hopped beer than I have done before where the hops were added just before the whirlpool. It is less than 2 weeks old, so really young and I wouldn't bother tasting so young normally but wanted to see what the hops did so early on. The taste is defo...

    Refractometer Woes

Hi All I am trying to get used to using a refractometer I purchased a month or 2 ago (https://www.amazon.co.uk/gp/product/B01FVTL044/ref=ppx_yo_dt_b_asin_title_o00_s00?ie=UTF8&th=1) I have taken some drops of water from the lid of my kettle and used that to baseline it to zero. Then when...

    **** HLT Woes

I have a plastic HLT Rather I HAD a plastic HLT. The element was no longer submerged, I was happy in a sparging world of my own and the element became a bit hot and melted the plastic HLT. I have another, identical plastic bin I could use but am wondering if I should go stainless steel. I only...

Clean in place - mounting the pump

Hi I have a 3 tier, all grain system, largely linked with standard 15mm copper tubing and am wondering if I can remove the few flexible tubes I do have, and attempt to clean in place (CIP) to simplify things a bit. My pump is one of these LINK which I have been using for years (since 2010)...

    refractometer

Hi I don't like the amount of beer I waste using a hydrometer but the reviews on Amazon for the refractometers it sells are often poor. Are refractometers any good and what is a good one? Can anyone advise me? Cheers Pete

    3 weeks in a fermenter

Hi I normally leave my all grain beer (bitter, IPA, not lager) in the fermenter at 19 deg C for 2 weeks, reducing to 5 deg C for the last 2 days, then rack into a cornie. Because of my full cornies, I'd like to reduce to 5 deg as normal, then leave it in the fermenter for a further 1 week (so...

    Kegerator question

I have a tall fridge with 4 Cornies in and want to add taps onto the front of the door. If the pipes to the taps are all inside the fridge, and I keep the fridge quite cold (5 deg C) then can I leave the taps connected and the beer in the pipes won't end up getting infected and ruin the beer...

Klarstein Maischfest - Mash Water calculation

I have purchased a Klarstein Maischfest and am trying to workout how much water to use when mashing. I know the Grainfather calculation for mash water is 2.7 x grain weight + 3.5 (so for 5kg it would be 17l of water). However the gap between the inner metal grain holder (not sure of the name)...
