    Made-to-order SS

It's been a while since I've posted (or brewed  ) work has taken over my life! Still, I'm toying with a little project, so I have been trying to find out about made-to-order stainless steel bits. There used to be a list of providers of various items on here, but haven't been able to find...

My somewhat failed attempt at Effin Oatmeal Stout

Finally cracked open a bottle of the Effin Oatmeal Stout I brewed a while before Christmas. Unfortunately, it wasn't as good as I'd hoped. It lacked body and flavour, seemed somewhat watery. I assume the problem is me, not the recipe as it's been tried and tested by many brewers on here. Any...

Anyone familiar with The Wincle Beer Company?

I was looking at their Brew For A Day - wondered if anyone has done it, or if anyone knows the brewery? Dennis

Not the news I wanted to hear...

Went to the hospital yesterday to get the result of a scan on my foot. I'm a professional dancer, but apart from teaching,  I haven't been dancing much since last Christmas due to problems with my foot. I'd thought it would pass,  even gave up teaching to give it time to get better. But the...

Do you rack to secondary fermentor?

The reason behind this poll is that I brew small batches (4.5L), so every drop is precious! But I have noticed that I tend to lose quite a bit of beer during initial fermentation. I ferment in demijohns with a blow-off tube for the first few days then changing to an airlock. I have a couple of...

    DIN rails in brewery automation

I have been reading about the BrewTroller, which uses DIN rails to mount components in some of of its set-ups. While my own automated brewery is still pie in the sky at least for some time, it got me thinking - how easy are they to use? It seems a handy way to mount SSRs and heat sinks...

    Best ever Hobgoblin clone?

What is your best Hobgoblin clone recipe? I know it's supposed to be 5.2% ABV and contains Styrian, Goldings and Fuggle hops. But I'm too new to this to work the rest out! Any input much appreciated! Dennis

    Fermenting temperature help!

I have two beers fermenting from yesterday's brewday. Both brews are fermenting vigorously, checked the stick-on thermometers earlier, they read 24°C and 26°C respectively - Nottingham yeast is meant to ferment no higher than 21°C! Ambient temperature is 20°C so not sure how to best lower...

    Double brew-day

Finally got a brew on again - not a moment too soon to get my Christmas brew under way! So I repeated my brew from last year - a take on a Wee Heavy with added liquorice extract - but this year I used twice the amount of liquorice as the flavour didn't really come through last time, and as I...

Step mashing schedules - how do you do it?

If you do stepped mashes, what is your mashing schedule? I know that many people use different schedules for different styles, so it would be helpful if you included a note about whether it's a cover-all-styles schedule, or if it relates to a particular style, or even a specific beer recipe...

    Heating element help

I've caught Shiny Fever, and so I'm investigating a few options... Looking at heating elements, I came across this one. However, it's from Hong Kong, so I'm not sure about it  Would I be better off getting one from a UK supplier? I've looked at similar ones from UK...

Retsina - anyone know how to make it?

I came across an old thread on here discussing how to make retsina: http://www.thehomebrewforum.co.uk/viewtopic.php?f=41&t=19335 However, the thread stops suddenly without ever really determining if it is possible to make home-made retsina, and if so, how to do it. So I was wondering if...

Counterflow wort chiller - where has the How To gone?

I'm sure I have seem a guide on how to build a counterflow wort chiller using copper pipe and garden hose plus a few other bits. All I could find was THIS thread, but there are no picture, and I KNOW I've seen pictures - there is not way I could have come up with that design in my head...

How to scale a HERMS set-up?

How do I scale a HERMS set-up? Not as in How do I climb up one... I mean, how do you work out what size HLT, mash tun and boiler you need? Also, how do you work out the necessary size of the HERMS coil? Any advice on choosing the size of plate chiller? Dennis

HERMS coil in HLT v HERMS coil in separate heat-ex kettle

Having the HERMS coil in the HLT vs having the HERMS coil in separate heat-exchange kettle - which is better? Pros and cons of each system? What do people use, recommend, and why? Discuss! Dennis

Lovely mini-tour of Hydes Brewery in Salford

Had to go on a course today at Hydes Brewery to learn about beer! Included a mini-tour of the brewery and lunch and a pint! Winning on all fronts! Wish all courses were like this! Dennis

Yeast and finings - still possible to harvest?

Had a thought: would it be possible to harvest yeast from a commercial cask of cask conditioned beer? I mean, it's possible with yeast in bottle conditioned beer, but would the use of finings render the yeast unusable? If not, would it need any special treatment before use? Dennis

Cutting stainless steel pipes - the easiest/best way?

I need to cut down a stainless steel pipe, but how do I do it? Can I just hack-saw it? Or is using one of those tube cutters better (not sure they will cut ss?)? Or some other way? Dennis
