    Suppliers changing Best Before dates

If you don't want to name and shame, maybe you could share this link with the supplier. If we take the supplier at their word that they're personally offended by your feeling cheated, then we can assume they're an honest person who doesn't realise how this would upset a large proportion of their...

    coopers new fermenter

Sounds like this is the one being referred to Coopers DIY Beer Craft Brew Kit (or similar) which if so, is the one I also have. I struggle to believe it's completely airtight but all the literature insists it is due to the clipped on lid being such a tight fit. In theory this should only be...

Layer of - presumably yeast - suspended 5-10 mm below surface

Will have been about 22 degrees and it's a Mangrove's Belgian Ale yeast M41. Been fermenting for 4 about days when I took the picture. It's been a real eye opener having the clear fermenter, I don't know how you guys cope without obsessively watching your brews :laugh8: Joking apart, I think...

Layer of - presumably yeast - suspended 5-10 mm below surface

I'm brewing a Belgian Blonde from grain. All went well during the brew, but splashed some miscellaneous sink gunk into the wort during chilling so could be infected I suppose :laugh8: Fermentation has gone fine so far but I've checked it this morning and found a layer of something hovering...

    What did(n't) I do wrong?

Bottling update, and thanks again for your advice. And I'll complete the story on tasting day! Rather than chuck it, I bottled a couple of bottles-worth, added some dextrose to the rest and then bottled that a few days later for learning purposes. I must admit, the beer itself smells fairly...

    What did(n't) I do wrong?

That makes total sense. I didn't really consider that some of the sugars may have been unfermentable. As my idea of an unpleasant beer is pretty much low alcohol and sweet, I might give the restart a try just for the learning, bottle a few and then try again. Huge thanks for the input guys...

    What did(n't) I do wrong?

Massive encouragement that I've not completely wasted my time, thanks all so far! Agree that I've learned a lot already though not enough to know how to avoid it again. In terms of the sparge, would it not be the case that if I didn't have enough sugars to ferment, my OG would have been much...

    What did(n't) I do wrong?

Having tried two successful extract brews, I decided to go for an all-grain BIAB for my favourite beer type, dunkles Hefeweizen. In the process, I think I've done everything wrong that you can do. As embarrassing as all these mistakes are, I'm going to flagellate myself before you all in the...

How do you measure your mash temperature?

Wanted to add my recent experience in, I measured my mash temp the other day with a digital IR thermometer, which I think came just from Amazon (similar to this one Infrared Thermometer -50°C ~ 380°C Non-Contact Digital Laser Infrared Thermometer with LCD Display Precision Digital High Quality...

Is the cleanliness of sugar not as important as everything else?

Thanks everybody. I decided to use sugar, but going straight from the primary fermenter to the bottles, had a (somewhat predictable) nightmare trying to get the right amount of sugar in each bottle. Ended up lashing in the drops in a flap, which by this time where also stuck together. God knows!

Is the cleanliness of sugar not as important as everything else?

I'm about to bottle my second ever batch (still not tried the first) and I've just received a bag of carbonation drops that were split open. Not knowing how they've been stored or when the packet bust open, I'm worried that any contamination in the packet could ruin every bottle. I've seen...
