    Mangrove Jacks M79

Has anyone used this yeast? I did an all grain today and thought I'd try this. Having pitched it I have read some comments on the internet saying that it has a very yeasty taste and doesn't clear at all well. Any advice would be welcome.

    Fullers yeast?

Thanks, everyone. I'll try it on one of my brews. Normally use Coniston Bluebird with good results, but went to my usual source for a bottle of it yesterday and they seem to have stopped stocking it, so I'm looking for decent alternatives.

    Fullers yeast?

Anyone used Fullers 1845 yeast from the bottle? Is it a top fermenter, and if so, how does it behave? Does it clear down nicely, and how about taste? Any comments would be much appreciated.

Stout and late adding of grains?

Hi, planning on doing a stout next and have read that some people add the darker grains towards the end of the mash to smooth the flavour out. does anyone have any experience of this? Thanks

Freeminer Brewery - what yeast ?

I seem to remember using Freeminer in the past with good effect. These days I usually get my yeast from bottles of Coniston Bluebird. Never had problems with it and it clears down nicely and seems to stick to the bottom of the bottles really well.

    Slow fermentation

Gave the yeast about 4 days in a bottle of starter solution, however it wasn't hugely active, I must admit, so maybe I should have given it a bit longer to build itself up. A fairly good yeast pancake did cover the top of the wort after the first day, but hasn't really thickened like it usually...

    Slow fermentation

Hi, did an all grain brew last sunday (6kg lager malt, 65g cascade hops) which started with an OG of 1060. The yeast I'm using is Coniston "Bluebird" recovered from the bottle which is what I usually use without any problems. It is now Thursday and the SG is only down to 1045. The temp. is 20C...

    Mash water

Have finally managed to find an online water report for my area. All the relevant mineral readings seem to be there but there doesn't seem to be an alkalinity score. There is however a "total hardness" figure. Is this the same thing and can I use it on the calculator?

    Mash water

Thanks. Tried putting my postcode into the site but unfortunately it's coming back that there is no information for my postcode. Guess I'll have to write to my water co. Will try to get a water testing kit tho'. Thanks for the info.

    Mash water

I live in a soft water area. Planning on doing an all-grain mash soon. I'm just using pale malt and hops. Is it worth putting burton water salts in, and if so how much. I don't know the chemical make up of my tap water, but assume that it is soft as soap lathers very easily. Any advice would be...

    HELP!!!!!

Just done an extract brew. Pitched yeast (safale 04) @ O.G.1046 Had good vigorous fermentation for 3 days and the gravity got down to 1022. Racked wort into another bin (which I always do) to take it off the sediment and a new foamy head formed quickly afterwards. 3 days later and the gravity...

    Wort chiller query

Yeah, I did wonder whether the debris from the cold break needed to be filtered, or at least whether it was as important to get rid of this as the trub from the hot break.

    Wort chiller query

Thanks for that. Seems like I've come to the right place to find answers to all those niggling questions I lie awake at night worrying about. I'm sure I'll be picking peoples brains on all aspects of the art of brewing over the next few weeks.

    Wort chiller query

Hi, new to this site. After a 6 year break from home brewing I'm restarting. Just bought a burco boiler and have fitted some copper pipe with holes drilled in it inside to act as a hopback. (I did this with my old burco that I stupidly gave away & it seemed to work fine). I am about to make a...
