    Question about lactose

Does anyone know how I can work out how much lactose to add after fermentation to reach my desired fg? Basically I want to back-sweeten 8 litres of beer from 1.010 to around 1.017 or so. Any help would be much appreciated.

Amount of yeast for Barleywine small batch

I'm planning on brewing my first English Barleywine this week. It's going to be a very small batch 6 litres. I'm using Danstar Nottingham yeast and my question is should I pitch the whole packet or would that be too much for such a small batch? I know it is possible to over-pitch yeast but I...

    HERMS PT100 question

I'm in the planning stage for my new HERMS, can someone tell me can THIS type of pt100 be installed with the probe in direct contact with the liquid or does it need a thermowell?

    Question on HERMS

I've just been doing a little research on herms and have a question. It may be a silly question and I may be missing something obvious but is there any reason why I couldn't use my immersion chiller as the coil in the herms system if I stick it in the hlt?

    Mash pH question

Yesterday I brewed a dark mild. I used Brun water for my water treatments and according to it, my mash pH should have been 5.3 (pretty much perfect). However when I tested a sample, cooled to 20c, about 15 mins after dough-in, it was pH 5.8. I know that is still in the acceptable range, and I...

Sparge method for first 3 vessel AG?

So I've been doing biab for about a year now and I've just acquired a 28 litre thermos cool box which I'm gonna convert to a mash tun next week, cos I fancy trying 'traditional' ag. I'm gonna be planning my first 3 vessel brew over the next week or so. What would people recommend with regards to...

    Heater Issues (pics)

Has anyone else had this problem with heating elements? These pics were taken after soaking in baking soda, vinegar, citric acid, star san and a good scrub with a brillo pad, so the black areas are not burnt on crusty stuff, it's as if the metal has discoloured. It's a 4kw element but it's about...

Record breaking brew day...Now with Pics

Today myself and Paddy brewed 9 different SMaSH extract brews, as a way of testing out various hops. We dissolved some light DME in hot water then split it into 9 batches of 2 litres each and boiled them, each with a different hop. We used: Cluster Fuggles EKG Saaz Tettnang Bravo Bramling...

    More yeast harvesting...

I know there are quite a few topics on reusing yeast from previous brews but it's something I've not really tried as yet. Yesterday however, I bottled my Bavarian wheat beer and on a whim decided to pour about 400 ml or so of the yeast cake into a spare pet bottle. I left the lid ajar and stuck...

    Water for IPA

Hi I'm planning a brew for next week, an English IPA, dry hopped with plenty of fuggles and EKG. Can someone glance over my intended water profile and tell me how it looks. The beer will be around 9 SRM, with about 44 IBU's. Target profile Calcium 140ppm Mg 18ppm Sodium 26ppm Sulphate 300ppm...

    Gold Label Barley Wine

I spotted a beer in our local asda the other day, Gold Label No. 1 barley wine in 330ml cans. Anyone tried this? I was intrigued cos I've never tasted a barley wine before. Though I noticed its 'only' 7.5%, is that not a bit low for the style? Just curious if it's worth a punt?

    Hop Swap?

I posted a few days ago about giving away some free cluster hops to anyone in NI without much interest so I thought I'd open up to the mainland if anyone fancies a swap? I have about 2kg of cluster 7.3% AA. These were vacuum sealed until about 4 days ago when we split them into 200 - 300g in...

    Username change?

Hi I was just wondering if it's possible to change my username? When I signed up I used the first half of my email address which is a random collection of letters and I'd like to change to something less nonsensical if poss :wha:

Anyone in NI want some hops?

I know there are a few brewers from NI on the forum so if anyone would like a free bag of cluster hops let me know. We got 5kgs on sale from simply hops but it's more than we'll ever use and we don't really have the storage space :D

Camomile, Honey and Vanilla Hippy Juice

Hi, I've just made a herbal teabag wine using Twinnings camomile, honey and vanilla bags. I've not added anything to it as yet, its just sugar, water and the tea infusion. However I noticed when looking at some hippy juice recipes, fruit juice is normally added to them. I'm not sure what juice...

    Free reverse osmosis water source

I just discovered a source of reverse osmosis water. I just realised today, although no doubt it's already been mentioned on the forum. Window cleaners who have the extendable pole system use RO water, cos it doesn't leave water marks. They filter the water in huge quantities so I'm sure most...

    Sparge sprinkler thing

This is gonna be my new sparge water sprinkler bucket thingy. Cost 50p in Tesco and it's made of food grade plastic, just needs a few 1mm holes drilled in the bottom :D

What do I do with cluster?

I just received 5kg of cluster hops, got them for £20 with free delivery from simply hops, but now I don't really know what to use them for. Are there any particular beer styles which cluster works well with, I've never used them before :wha:
