Fish tank heater directly in fv.....pros and cons?

I bought a kids Flexi-tub (with a horrific "Moshi Monsters" logo on it ) from Asda for £5, 50 watt fish tank heater from eBay for £4. sit the FV in it, fill with water to about 4/5ths height of the fv, set fish tank heater on 21 degrees, gives a perfect temperature of 18 degrees to my...

First grain kit - please tell me I'm doing this right!

a good intermediate pot that will make this a LOT easier and means you won't have to split into two pots is the £15 16Litre pot from Wilkinsons. I do all my extract brews in there and it works a treat.

First partial mash done, a few questions

I strain everything through muslin folded over, and my efficiency has shot up. I also do a large amount of grain bag squuezing. some say this releases tannins but I do it regularly and have never noticed any detrimental effect at all.

    Intro - new member

hi and welcome. Is the name DenbyDalePie a reference to the place as well as the pie? if so I used to live just over in Penistone before moving up To Tyne & Wear, small world! my top tip would be temperature monitoring. if you can, ferment at a steady temperature sonewhete18-20*c. It makes a...

    Dr Who.....

just been dragged to the cinema to see this by the missus. I watch Dr Who by proxy. I don't dislike it but I'm not mad keen on it, She however loves it so I end up watching it regardless. I thought it was alright, but nothing special. would have liked to see a few older docs in it I.think

    Coopers Kit IBUs

So the stout and the IPA have the same IBU? :S. Interesting info, I'm sure will help a few people out.

    Second brew, stout additions?

I've never used this kit before so I have no idea whether it does need additional bittering or not, I'm sure someone will be along to confirm this soon. However if not and for future here's a good way to get a rough gauge as to whether it does or not, and how to do it. It sounds complex, but...

PC Security - Hacked Bank :(

system restore? or better yet, Do you have everything you need backed up on an external HDD? if so, I would consider formatting. If you don't, I would consider doing so immediately to avoid trouble in the future. I did this just after uni, had everything backed up anyway and simply used an...

    Brewing with chocolate

Yeah tried Holland & Barrat and various other health food shops, they only seem to stock Lactase Enzyme, for those who are lactose intolerant. Would it be possible to brew using chocolate powder without Lactose then? I'm not gonna be able to get my hands on any before Friday and I'm averse to...

    Brewing with chocolate

I've seen many recipes involving chocolate that call for caoco/cocoa nibs and Lactose. after looking into it, I think I'd like to use cocoa powder and lactose, but I have a couple of questions. First, where can I get ahold of Lactose from that isn't the internet? I've been everywhere looking...

Planning and preparation prevents **** poor performance.

Couldn't agree more. The thing is as well I was stupid enough to write one, and yet not check through my delivery to see if it was all there. Pretty annoyed at the company, but I suppose it was my own fault. Question - if I'm using VWP to sterilise, could I just leave my stuff in it til Friday...

Planning and preparation prevents **** poor performance.

Planned to brew a honey porter today. Received my ingredients in the post this morning. Went into town, bought some more muslin and some honey, came home and sanitised all my equipment and began to heat strike water. A small feeling at the back of my mind said "just double check everything", so...

kettle finings when not boiling full volume?

kettle finings when not boiling full volume?

cheers for the quick replies fellas. I sort of do this part already. I ferment, dry hop in primary vessel but after fg is reached, then transfer to bottling FV and bottle with little bottler. should I transfer and maybe dry hop in a secondary vessel and then siphon off again into a tertiary...

kettle finings when not boiling full volume?

I've just had a delivery of brewing gear, White House Honey Porter @ 7.6%ABV . my last batch I seemed to suffer from quite a lot of sediment in the FV and the bottles. I lost more than a litre of the FV to sediment, and I'm having to leave the last 1.5-2CM of each bottle in the bottle...

Extract #2 - "Sorta Porter" [pics]

apologies in advance for the quality of some of the images, I used my "smart" phone  Mash in: Spent grains: Hops waiting for boil: Start of boil: A lively hot break (I think, I'm still unsure what one looks like :S)!: Calmed down and Magnum in: Yeast starter waiting: First...

Extract #2 - "Sorta Porter" [pics]

I actually brewed this on the 12th, but just haven't had time to write it up yet. I have previously mainly brewed IPA style beers, but since moving to extract I figured It'd be handy to get to grips with the partial mash process, as I intend to move to AG as soon as space and money (and SWMBO)...

Cheap & Simple Tropical Punch - A BBQ MUST

if you carbonate in the bottle, then as a byproduct there is sediment in the sealed bottle. suprised to hear it keeps its fizz as well as this. might have to try this as it would save space

    Increasing the OG?

should also probably point out that the longer you leave it between pitching and adding DME, the less accurate your OG reading will be anyway, as the yeast will already have started to metabolise the sugar.
