On the same day, Mr Cleverly had promoted a raft of new government measures to tackle spiking and described it as a "perverse crime".

According to reports by the Sunday Mirror, Mr Cleverly told some female guests there that "a little bit of Rohypnol in her drink every night" was "not really illegal if it's only a little bit".

It also says he laughed that the secret to a long marriage was ensuring your spouse was "someone who is always mildly sedated so she can never realise there are better men out there".

Will Labour be able to turn the tide?

Honestly the only way they could ruin the NHS any quicker would be burning down some hospitals. But even that might mean they'd actually build some new ones...

Proper nob head that mon
Indeed. And it's not even a funny joke, imagine getting all this attention and no one probably even laughed along when you made it. Big yikes.

Conservative MP Chris Skidmore says he will stand down as an MP next week in protest at plans to issue more oil and gas licences.

The former minister said he was resigning as a Tory MP ahead of a vote on a bill on Monday that would guarantee annual licensing rounds.

The move will trigger a by-election in his Kingswood seat in Gloucestershire.

He added his constituents deserved a new MP after his "personal decision" not to continue as a Tory MP.

Mr Skidmore had already announced he would stand down at the next election - but the by-election will bring another headache for Prime Minister Rishi Sunak.

Yes. They do.

Tata Steel announcing they are closing some surfaces and axing 3000 jobs. Didn't the government give them half a billion pounds last year to stay open?

Something to do with being greener, bet the 3000 are over the moon about that, but never mind China and India will soon make the shortfall in co2 up

How is banning machetes and zombie knives going to stop stabbings you can stab someone with a screw driver if you are determined, what we need is more stop and search and stiffer sentences for people caught carrying, why is it a mandatory 6 months In prison for a second offence it should be forcthe first..

That's exactly the same argument that the NRA make about why you shouldn't ban guns. And it's a stupid argument.

Which is why the argument to rebuild the youth communities is a strong one, since 2010 the funding for youth and community services has been slashed. (No youth clubs, so nowhere safe to hang out, so need a knife to protect themselves ) and this thought does seem to be packed up by data.
Anyone hear Philps moaning about the Labour government not doing anything about zombie knives? Minister, they couldn't, they weren't around till 2011 and who has been in government since?

Gun owners use the excuse that they need guns for self defence as do many knife carrying youths, the police have posted stats saying if you carry a knife for self defence you are three times more likely to be stabbed i wonder if the same stats apply to gun owners, the government want to ban two types of knife how is that going to stop stabbings when by far the most commonly used knife in stabbings is a kitchen knife?

The most common knife used in teenage stabbings is taken from the kitchen, Sir Ian Blair has said.
The Metropolitan Police Commissioner unveiled some of the deadly weapons seized during a two-week blitz on knife-carrying criminals at New Scotland Yard.
Sir Ian revealed that the majority of those weapons discovered on the streets of the capital were ordinary domestic knives.

"The most common knife involved in these deaths is a knife from the kitchen and we must have conversations about knife crime with teenagers."
In a report to the Metropolitan Police Authority today, Sir Ian said Operation Blunt, the name given to the anti-knife blitz, is targeting both where weapons are used and where those who use them live

Part of the desire for the zombie knives is the intimidation factor. The use of them to actually stab may be less, but its about changing behaviours.
You can carry a screwdriver and use that to stab someone. This is still classed as a sharpnor bladed article if used for threatening behaviour.

6 months in prison for carrying what, exactly ? Zombie knives only, or anything that could be used to stab someone ?

As this is all taking place in a Tory party thread, it's probably also worth recording that knife crime is a pretty big problem in Wales and London also - where Labour are the relevant governing body. I'm really not sure this one is a party political issue.

100% this. The closure is a direct result of the net zero madness. It was utter hypocricy for Labour to condemn the closure, whilst at the same time claiming they would pursue an even harder net zero agenda than the Tories. There's plenty to bash the conservative government for, but in this specific case the alterative looks even worse.

Maybe not 6 months for a first offence but it has to be jail time for carrying a knife for self defence, the deterrent has to be severe enough to stop these people carrying knives they are obviously not put off by police stop and search and the punishment they receive if caught the first time.

Two boys, aged 15 and 16, have died after being stabbed in south Bristol.

They were attacked in Knowle West at about 23:20 GMT on Saturday by a group of people who fled the scene in a car, Avon and Somerset Police said.
Officers arrived within minutes of being called and gave the boys first aid at the scene, but both died in hospital on Sunday morning.
A 44-year-old man and 15-year-old boy have been arrested and are in custody. A vehicle has also been seized.
Police have launched a murder investigation.

Bristol Commander Supt Mark Runacres said officers were keen to speak to passengers who were on a bus on Ilminster Avenue, where the stabbings occurred, at the time.
"Our collective thoughts are with their families at what is undoubtedly a very difficult time. Specialist family liaison officers will now be assigned to the families to provide them with support and keep them updated on the investigation," he said.
"A cordon is in place on Ilminster Avenue between Newquay Road and Tavistock Road, and members of the public can expect to see a large police presence as forensic searches and other enquiries are conducted."
Formal identification of the victims has not yet taken place and a forensic post-mortem will be scheduled in due course.

Absolutely agree 👍🏻 For what it’s worth how much effort has been put into finding out why these kids feel the need to protect themselves? If they genuinely feel that they’re at risk of violence or worse surely that’s what needs to be an addressed.

I know some members might disagree with me here, but I’ll come out and say it. If I felt that I or my family was in danger then I’d walk around tooled up regardless of whether it was legal to do so or not.

It's the vicious circle of thinking everyone else carries a knife so they need to carry one.

Looks like the predicted tax cut (read bribe) may not now happen Teresa's magic money tree must not have grown as fast as they expected.
