How low can an FG go?

I did an Evil Dog kit last year and that finished at 1.010. Lowest I've had has been 1.006 for a Razorback and a Bad Cat Imperial Red.

    How long does homebrew last?

I just tried another one from the same batch (also in a PET bottle) and it was spot on. No hint of staleness or off flavours. Not bad for 17 months in plastic :) Overall not very conclusive as to how long bottled beer keeps! I think yesterday's one was only the second duff bottle (poor...

    How long does homebrew last?

I did a batch of Festival's Limited Edition Summer Glory Golden Ale back in September '13. Thinking it wasn't going to be reissued I made it last as long as possible, and have been trying them every now and then, and the last one sampled in December was fine. In the spirit of scientific...

    Best commercial beer

As much as I like hoppy beers the two commercial beers I've enjoyed the most in the last year have been bitters. Station Bitter from Stonehouse Brewery and Redwood from Grain Brewery. Hopefully when I get myself up & running with AG I'll be able to work towards clones of these.

    Dry Hopping a Wherry???

I bottled this three weeks ago, and as it was clear I tried one after two weeks. Very nice, though SWMBO pulled a face after just a sniff and was decidedly unappreciative after actually tasting it! Had another bottle on Friday and it's improving still. I normally reckon Wherry gets to its best...

Bulldog Brews Bad Cat Imperial Red

Furious is a good way to describe it! It blasted out the top of the airlock & pooled yeast sludge all over the lid the first night. Cleaned it up and replaced the airlock with another (sanitised) one. Did the same again on day two, and day three. It finally calmed down enough after a week, and...

    Electrim 33l Boiler.

I bought one to use for BIAB but not yet used it. I went to a BIAB demo at Morley Home Brew which used the same boiler - worked really well.

    Bulldog Bad Cat

I've just got this one on the go this afternoon. I tried some at a Hambleton Bard open day and thought it was worth a go. I'm gearing up to go all grain but still keep finding kits I want to do!

    Dry Hopping a Wherry???

And just to be contrary the Wherry has been happily bubbling away since adding the hops yesterday morning!

    Dry Hopping a Wherry???

Dry hopped my Wherry this morning. 35g Citra added loose, and 15g done as a hop tea in 200ml boiling water for 10 minutes. I'm after a bit more flavour in the beer as well as the aroma, so I'll see how it goes. Hopefully get it bottled Wednesday/Thursday. I thought the Wherry had stuck as it...

Bulldog Brews Bad Cat Imperial Red

That's good to know :) I bought this kit on the strength of a tasting at the recent Hambleton Bard Open Day at Morley Home Brew and thought it was quite different. It was apparently only a week or two old, so it promises to be a very good one. It's the next one on my list to start, probably just...

what to use for FV bath?

That's a bit overkill, and will be awkward to use (too tall). The standard flexible garden trug like these - http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/FLEXI-GARDEN-TUB-LARGE-TRUG-BUCKET-CONTAINER-BUILDING-MATERIAL-HOLDER-PLASTIC-/141480135754 - in the large size (generally 39 - 42 litres) are ideal. The base...

    Bottle Tree.

I have an 80 bottle tree** (though only use it as a 50) that copes with a wide range of bottles. I have quite a few Sam Smiths 550ml bottles which are quite heavy, and also some almost weightless PET bottles. As long as I remember to distribute the heavy ones around the base it seems fine. Even...

    What causes the homebrew twang?

So far I've not had any kits produce beer with a twang, including a couple of Razorback brews. I've used a waterbath for the FV since my first brew, so temps have always been controlled down to a degree or two. That's helped by not brewing when I know it's going to be cold (though I now have two...

How Long Do Plastic Pet Bottles Last?

I tend to get given a lot of glass bottles so I'm using less PET bottles now - maybe 10 or so in each batch. No discernible difference in carbonation or taste between them & glass even after six months or more. I guess some of the Coopers ones I have (the first ones I bought) have done five...

    Electric mashing and boiling bin

I recently went to a BIAB demo at Morley Home Brew where they use a similar one - a Peco digital http://www.morleyhomebrewcentre.com/ucommerce/heating-cooling/electrim-digital-mash-bin/c-23/c-215/p-1375 which did the job very well. I just bought the same one this weekend while at their bottle...
