    How long with wine wand?

I use a wine wand for degassing but I'm not sure how long I need to use it for. Any suggestions? I've run the wine wand in the drill for about 5 mins at a time until the bubbles stopped then left it and run the drill again a few times.

    cloudy when cold??

Having went to a lot of trouble brewing then clearing an Apple wow which I've just bottled I'm somewhat confused as to why it's crystal clear on bottling however once placed in the fridge overnight it goes cloudy!! oak chips

Having added the oak chips that came with my 2 beaverdale kits that I've just started and realised it's basicallly sawdust, I wondering what will happen to them and will they hinder racking into my secondary? I take it (I hope!) they'll sink and end up with the lees? Both kits are going well...

4.5 or 5 litre to start?

I've just put on 2 Beaverdale 6 bottle kits, Chateau du Roi and Sauvignon Blanc. Both sets of instructions say to make up to 4.5 at start in 5l vessel but that's right up to the bottom of my glass 4.5 do necks so only leaves 2 inches or so. I made them up to 4l initially but should I have used...

    How to bulk brew?

I'm sitting sipping a glass or two of WOW apple wine that I started on 19/07 and although I know it will improve in a month or two I'm pretty glad already that I made 25l of it! I brewed it in a fermenter...

    Storage - dark cupboard ok?

I'm sure it will be ok but I'm looking for confirmation. I want to bulk mature 4 or 5 plastic DJs of juice wine and the only place I have to store them out of the way is a hall cupboard which is obviously dark. I take it this will make no difference to the finished wine? Is it better to be...

    Turbo cider bulk maturing

I have 23l of TC to rack from my fv into a wine fermenter as I 'm moving in a month so it's easier to transport in the wine one as it has a screw top etc. For bulk maturing should it be kept warm or put somewhere cold?

    Alternatives to bottling cider?

I've made a couple of 23l cider kits and a TC in a DJ. After only a short time I'm reasonably fed up with the whole bottling process of washing, drying, sterilising, etc. I'm aware of plastic kegs that are fairly reasonable to buy but the mini cylinders appear to raise the cost of this method...

    Oops! Too much sugar?

Today I decided to make another variant of WOW from ChippyTea's excellent post on supermarket juice wines. I decided to use 3l of wgj with 1l of pineapple. The recipe said 500g sugar which I heated with half a litre of water. I made a mug of 3 bag tea to add for tannin and added 20 raisins to...

Where / how do you store your homebrew?

Having just started making wine and cider and not having the luxury of a shed or garage I was wondering where or how everyone stores the countless bottles of wine etc that they are making. I've just bottled 23l of cider, have got 2 DJs nearly ready to rack and I've spent the evening copying...

    Degassing tool?

I've watched a few youtube videos of various degassing improvisations ranging from a plastic coat hanger to a wine saver vacu pump and even one guy who had taped the bottom of an airlock to his vacuum cleaner to insert into a demijohn. A google search on wine degassing tool mostly brings back...

    WOW clearing?

I've made my first WOW from the basic recipe ie 1l orange juice and 1l WGJ. I've racked it after fermentation had finished and I've added a campden tablet, wine stabiliser and finings. Overnight there is about 5mm of sediment in the bottom of the DJ. Should I rack this again or leave to age a...

    Plastic topped wine corks

Saw these in my LHBS and wondered if they were any good? http://www.brewstore.co.uk/plastic-topp ... 1423-p.asp Pros - easy to fit as no corker required, reusable Cons - I suspect they might not seal as well as a cork but I'd gladly be told otherwise! Anyone used them?

OTR mixed berry kit adding Lowicz raspberry

Looking for some advice please. I started my on the rocks mixed berry cider kit on Monday evening. On Wednesday I joined this forum and read ScottMs excellent review but now realise I will probably end up with a watery result as I followed the kit instructions as opposed to brewing slightly...

    Hello!

I'm Nigel and I've decided to give home brewing another, hopefully better informed, try. I tried a few demijohns of wine about 15 years ago which failed miserably so I gave up after that. I have just started a Ritchies On the Rocks mixed berry cider. I really wish I had looked on here first as...
