Hi guys. I had an absolutely gorgeous pint of Adnams Southwold "make it rain" at my local Wetherspoon's over the weekend. I'm planning to have my 3rd all grain brew day next Friday and would love to be able to male something similar to this beer. I've only done 2 BIAB beers so far so my experience of AG and recipe creation is still very little. However the brew next Friday will be done using my new mash tun so will be my 1st "proper 3 vessel AG beer"

So I did some googleing and i found out a little info about the adnams make it rain beer.

Its an American Pale Ale style beer

http://adnams.co.uk/about/news/beer-new ... n-outlets/

This article doesn't give quantities but it mentions the following:

Malts used -

Munich
Carahell
Carafoam
Pale ale malt

Hops used -

Simcoe
Citra
Amarillo

I have no idea about how much of each should be used in a recipe but if someone could give me some advice on how I can create a great tasting 5% ish APA from these ingredients or similar I would be very greatful.

Cheers guys

Adam

Carahell and Carafoam are essentially the same so I'm not sure why they'd use both. The description says it's a brownish beer so I'd have expected something darker than Munich to give some colour.

This one is more about the hops than the malt so I wouldn't get too hung up on the malt bill. I'd use mostly pale with some Munich for depth and then crystal for some sweetness and colour. That's a guess since I haven't had the beer. You could just use pale and Munich with a little black malt for colour. Your choice.

Was it a really bitter beer? I'd maybe go with the simcoe for bittering and then a blend throughout the rest of the boil from 20 minutes to the end.

I have no idea how close that would get you but it's a start.

that looks pretty good. Plenty of late hopping will be nice!

do you think It would benefit if i added some crystal malt to it? aswell as or in place of some of the munich?

Well, how was the body on the beer you had? Was it dry? A little sweet? A lot? Since they didn't mention crystal, it probably isn't needed. I add it to all my APAs but it's pretty common to do so here in the US.

You want some very light crystal, hell is german for light. It has ebc 20-3o.

The Adnams description says hops at all stages. Easy drinking, aromatic - so won't be bitter, lots of late hops.Wouldn't worry bout the carafoam, it's just for head formation really and not crucial, maybe add a bit of wheat, but not necessary, the crystal will do the job.

By 'at all stages' they are likely to mean from about 30 mins from the end of the boil - maybe 30, 20, 10, 5, 0, Dry. Increase the amounts as you get later. You can get a lot of bitterness from 30 and 20 min additions.

Thanks for the advice guys.

So with the hop schedule would it be better to move the 2 7g additions from 60 minutes to 30 minutes? Then increase the amounts used at flame out to maintain the IBU of about 40? Or would this be too much bitterness?

Beer smith Will tell you what IBUs to expect so go by that.

I just last week did the above APA with exclusively late additions. 45Ibus

I currently have an APA in the FV. For 14 litres I used 60 gr of amarillo as late (10/5/0) additions which has given a good hop flavour. I'll then put another 40gr in for dry hopping.

Not had the beer in question but from my experience of Adnams whilst well hopped they're not as heavily hopped as a lot of the American IPA/APA styles I've drunk.

I had this beer last week, and too found it to be delicious. I don't have the best palate in the world, but I personally found it quite bitter, not in any way a bad thing, and it wasn't too much. Just about right for an APA in my opinion.

Will be interested to see how this turns out.

It certainly is a very nice beer! I'm struggling with knowing how much hops to use as I'm still new with AG.

Maybe I should up the flame out addition and use more dry hops?

How long would a brew like this stay at its best? I only ask because I'm brewing this for a competition but it won't be getting drunk until September this year! So that's 5 months in the bottle assuming I Brew this next week like I've planned

In my experience the very hoppy brews are better drunk when young. The last one I made was lovely after only two weeks in the bottle. I would say to brew this 4-6 weeks before the competition. Maybe have a practice run now?

Think I will follow your advice and leave this until sometime around June.

Will it be OK to order the hops and grains around now ( pre crushed) as long as they are kept in sealed bags? Hops will be kept on freezer?
