Hi Guys,

Quick question.

With any home brew Ive made, there is always an amount of sediment left over at the bottom of the bottle which is a bit of a pain so I wanted to know if there is anyway to creat a lager with no sediment left at the end?

I like to drink my lager from the bottle but cannot do this due to the sediment and would love a solution to allow me to create something that has no sediment left over?

thank you

Firstly...learn to drink from a glass.

Home brewed beers put into bottles, are what's called bottle conditioned ales. A small amount of sugar is placed into the bottle so the yeast can "eat" and make your gas to give you fizzy beer. This action will also produce some dead yeast and sediment. More gas produced ( as in lager ) more sediment.
If you learn to use a glass, this sediment can mostly be left in the bottle when poured and you will have a relatively clean drink.

Anyway the yeast deposit is good for you,

In short homebrewers need to pour the bottle carefully in 1 go into a glass leaving the last drop in the bottle . You could use certain yeasts that will compact in the bottle , and you could leave the bottle to condition for many months to increase the yeast to be better compacted but you can't really drink from the bottle without disturbing some sediment .

Apart from the fact that drinking you lager from the bottle is a marketing con by the big brewers to get round the fact that their beer has no aroma...

Seriously - your beer will smell nice and that's half the enjoyment! Stick it in a glass...

As to sediment, get hold of a fridge off freecycle, rack your lager to a clean FV, get the fridge as cold as it'll go and leave it in there for a month before bottling. Crisp tasty lager and practically no sediment. :thumb:

hey i came across these a while back maybe they we be of use to you http://sedexbrewing.com/
hope it helps

They are cool and would, I reckon, be the perfect answer to picnic beers.

There's no UK distributor at the moment AFAIK, so you'd have to source them from the US. I think they only fit certain types of bottle though...

Its simple really. If you brew, you will have to live with sediments. Or go trough the hassle and money by using a corny with a "beer gun" but is it really worth it...?

Yes, corny with a beer gun works very well, but........only if you've racked clear beer into the corny or kept it in the corny long enough for the yeast to settle first (just like a big bottle) or used finings in the primary or the corny or both. And then you also need to carbonate in the corny either forced or primed. Plenty of options for the lager boys

Sorry I have to agree with my learned friends above, drinking out of a bottle is a :nono: :nono:

Beer is about aroma as well as flavour in fact the perception of taste is a combination of taste bud stimulation and olfactory stimulation. Drinking out of a bottle is like drinking with a permanent cold.

Oh and while I am at it don't drink it freezing cold again no flavour and again another marketing trick by the conglomerate brewer ad men to try and convince you (not me) to drink flavourless fizzy pop.

So if you want appreciate and make wonderful tasting and smelling beer get your self a glass.

Well said that man! Even better, get a variety of different "specialist" glasses...take a note from Belgium where each beer is served in a matching glass, each different. For me, it just adds to the beer experience and makes it a lot more special than just chucking as much fizzy, cold pop down your throat as you can. (</Off soapbox>)

well i did read some where how to get rid of your sediment you store the bottles up side down in the fridge or shed then place them up side down in the freezer then...you can open the bottle dig out the sediment replace the lid then drink it without no sediment ...

i cant say iv tried it ...

regards mick... :hat: .

Iv had a bit of trouble with beers tasting slightly "yeasty".

So im gonna try racking off into a secondary and letting a bit more of the **** fall out.

How will this affect carbonation in the bottle after priming?

That is the method for removing sediment from sparkling wine and I'm sure would work with beer, but you have to leave it for a while to allow the liquid to carbonate and then freeze it. The gas should help push the sediment plug out. It is a bit of a faff though!
And another but.... If you drink anything from a bottle you don't get the aroma and only the taste buds at the front of your mouth get to taste any of the lovely stuff, which really won't do it justice!
Everyone on here is passionate about beer but each to his own and I'm sure you enjoy your beer however you drink it Robbie :thumb: But you did ask the question

Lets us know if you give any of the suggestions a go.

Cheers,

erl :drink:
