I won a local beer comp and part of the prize was 300g of the newly released Superdelic hops. Been scratching my head what to brew with them. Here's the info available...

"Superdelic™ is the brand-new hop cultivar released into market this 2023 season by leading co-operative NZ Hops Ltd. After more than 10 years of breeding work, the early brewer trials suggest it will deliver like no other.

“This exceptional hop is a playful number, with red fruit, candy, citrus and tropical fruit characteristics, offering brewers something totally different to use in their craft. We’re excited to release this unique hop and expect it will create a frenzy.” says Blair Stewart, general manager of NZ Hops."

They've been sitting in the freezer a couple of months and really not sure what style they'd suit other than a fruity hazy NEIPA (that I'm not overly fond of) so just thought I'd chuck some in an APA and see what happens.

Panhead Supercharger is a great beer and the name writes itself (Superdelic Supercharger) so I created a recipe loosely based on that, replacing Simcoe with Superdelic.
So stone fruit, pine and citrus replaced with less citrus, more berry and tropical fruit. Might work, might be rubbish. I've ordered ingredients (recipe based around what I have in stock) so hope to brew later this week.

[Brewfather give Simcoe AA as 13% and Superdelic as 9.7%. The hop packet info however states 11.6% AA so I've used that figure]

ABV - 5.8%
EBC - 11.6
IBU - 50
23 litres

Simple American ale/crystal grain bill, clean US-05 yeast, and hopping schedule is:

60 mins
  • Superdelic to meet target IBU, 3-4g
10 mins
  • 41g Superdelic
  • 34g Amarillo
  • 23g Centennial
Hopstand
  • 41g Superdelic
  • 34g Amarillo
  • 23g Centennial
Dry hop
  • 50g Citra
  • 50g Superdelic

(around 300g total hops).

Really no idea how this will go. The only time I've tried to brew a Supercharger I did it with a mate and we got horribly drunk so it was a disaster... 😄

Can only be an improvement on that. Will update as I go...

Heh, I know plenty of people who would kill for some Super Derek, you must be about the only homebrewer to get your hands on it, even commercial breweries are being heavily rationed until the bines have got up to full speed.

But yeah, it's kinda aimed at NEIPAs, from everything I've heard it's in that Nectaron or Galaxy area albeit not quite the same. So ... anywhere you'd use Nectaron or Galaxy.

But I must admit that for my first beer I would have kept it super-simple, just a basic single-hop beer at 6g/l or so just to get a feel for it even if it did end up overpowering and unbalanced and in need of blending. But at 13g/l you're some way from a classic APA....

Yeah really just feel the need to use some. The beauty of home brewing is being able to experiment. And you can hide drink the mistakes... 🙂

Love Galaxy, have used it in a few brews, might look at those ones again, ta.

Other thought was a clean NZ Pilsner using it to see what it imparts. Might do that yet...

Prize included branded cap, T shirt and carry bag. Might strut around wearing them for street cred with the beer nerds... 😄

(The hops are actually readily available here in brewshops)...
Dare you to wear when we meet in Dunedin.
I've just used NZH 104 in a west coast IPA as they said pine, resinous on the notes.
Not a jot of it, more fruity hazy IPA, made my WCIPA interesting!

I've been using NZH-102 (now Superdelic) for a good while now and I certainly wouldn't waste them in that slurry of mud known as NEIPA. They're an NZ hop ffs. Make a nice NZ Pilsner or a faux-pilsner with them. Look at some of the Oz recipes like Stone and Wood's Pacific Ale and substitute them into that. Or do something really daft like sub them into Harrisons's Vacant Gesture (recipe online) instead of the Mosaic. They're a lovely hop, but not as radically amazing as Nectaron, in my opinion and (also in my opinion) no more worthy of commercialisation than NZH-101. They're not brand new, I've been getting them from Beerco.com for about a year now. But don't waste them in an NEIPA that would be a crime against decency.
Anyone in the UK who wants to try these, Beerco knock them out for £6 for 100g, some of the NZ and Oz hops are even cheaper. Lutra is £6 a sachet: compare that with the major English supplier. Postage is high but the saving is so great, it's quickly covered, and more.
Or.... CML is waiting for their order of Superdelic to come in, and it surely will, but I haven't had a price from Steve and the gang yet.

Great info, ta. Did laugh at 'slurry of mud'... 😀

And working on a NZ pils recipe now. Might pair the Superdelic with Riwaka to see how it goes...

[Edit] surprised nobody has marketed the name PilsNZer yet...

Looks great, never done a West coast. Recipe in Brewfather now and tweaking for local ingredients. The west coast of NZ is a special wild, rugged place I have links to, so an all NZ hop version sounds good.

Cleaned Brewzilla, fermenter and plate chiller last night, and milled grain. Will get started on the Supercharger shortly (6am, still dark)... 🙂

Brew done, in fermentation fridge and clean-up done by lunchtime. No dramas, except my new hydrometer is too long for my sample tube (broke my last one) so it hits the bottom at low gravities (tested it in fresh water). Can use it in the plastic tube it came in, but annoying.

Interesting smelling the hops. Superdelic is very aromatic, and sort of ruins your sense of smell going to less pungent ones. To my uneducated nose It's a sort of orange/tropical fruit smell. Amarillo is very faint in comparison, and lemony, and Centennial is sort of a citrus/pine crossover...

Simple beer, exceeded OG (1.058, target 1.056) and just used 2 pkts rehydrated US-05, and as usual I pumped all but the real sludge into the fermenter. I've found it settles out post fermentation during cold crash, and never had any clarity issues.

Still getting used to using a plate chiller, water temp is 10 degs and it chills so fast compared to immersion coil. Was difficult not to overshoot chilling to 75 degs for hopstand, think I'll rig up a valve/tap fixed to the bench so I can control the flow...

Initial taste test promising, very sweet naturally but pleasing hoppiness present.

@sifty
I've fitted a T with temp well on the exit of my CFC, I use one of my spare temp probes on my system to monitor the outflow temp.
Very handy.
Hope there's some left you can bring to Dunedin.

@RoomWithABrew Yeah I shift my camlock fitting temp probe from the BZ pump outlet to outlet of chiller, so can read temp ok, problem is my water comes from an outside tap via a hose, so a nearby water valve would save a bit of panicked running... 😀

Full bore the outlet temp was less than 20 degs, discovered by crimping the hose I had some control, but was running out of hands...

I'm sure I can get a few bottles to Dunedin... 🙂

Fermenting away in the slow and steady manner of US-05. Started bubbling overnight and regular rapid 'gloops' from the blow off tube. Been a while since I used this yeast, the last few have gone like a rocket by comparison...

Interestingly there is a great fruity smell when I open the fridge, can only assume it is from the hops with such a neutral yeast. Have experienced similar before from liquid yeasts known for producing fruity/estery aromas...
