The pvc tube worked in a fashion, but I felt as if I could do better. The tip of a biro pen, with a small rubber o ring to seal and now I can really get some pressure behind it. The pvc pipe was too flexible, a bit hit and miss. The biro is sturdy and works every time.

My piece of pvc tube idea works but it only allows air based on pressure pushing against the valve. I found that a piece of stiff material in the end (a nail), allows the pvc tube to push down on the valve, and now I can get some substantial pressure behind it. Who needs an expensive setup.

I saw that video yesterday. It's a good advert as to why not bother with a battery operated grinder. :cool:

I've already figured that I could use a car schrader valve connected to a bicycle pump. The schrader valve mushroom rubber end should make a strong enough seal to pump some air in if needed. I'll let you know if and when.

I'm looking for the overall steeping volume. What volume (in litres) would 5kg of grain + 15 litres of strike water roughly equate to. This is my typical brew

I can't work this out, so maybe someone has a simple formula. 5kg of grain + 15litres of strike water = how many litres (approx)

I paid about £10 for mine from a local ex catalogue shop.

I don't have the grainfather, so I'm not qualified to comment on that piece of kit. However, I do have a 5 gallon boiler/kettle. I use a scourer to keep the bottom clean.

mine works well. I removed the polestyrene, drilled a few holes in the bottom outer skin, and filled the cavity with vermiculite. The holes I plugged with rubber gromets. If I do it right, i might only see half a degree drop.
