Kilner Beer Kit - reduced at Asda

Popped into Asda to do me weekly shop and their kits (lager/bitter/cider) have been reduced from £19.50 (far too high IMO) down to £6!!! Not that I really need kits as I do BIAB and AG brews but can't argue with that price so I got one, but will prob get a few others so I can...

    Banks's beer at the Co-Op

Not sure if it's just my local branch (and if it is i'm going back for more!) but the Co-Op is stocking the 500ml bottles of Banks's Bitter for 58p...

    Corks popping out

Apologies for the billy basic question; I brew more beer than wine, but I do dabble now & again. So basically, I usually put wine into clear beer bottles and just cap it. However, I recently got my hands on some green wine bottles and one champagne bottle. So I did the usual - added sugar to...

    Denton Beer (1825)

A while ago, I tried to find an online recipe for an IPA from 1825 but somehow I ended up reading about this article... http://www.dailymail.co.uk/news/article-2095091/Beer-recipe-laced-treacle-discovered-historical-notebook-cost-just-11p-pint.html (feel try to Google the term "denton beer...

    Ebay woe...however

Basically, I've been sold a catering urn on eBay that wasn't as described. Now, whilst I'm out for blood from the seller (the concept of me returning it in the post at my own cost will probably have to be addressed) I want to see if anyone here can help me potentially salvage it. It has 3...

    HMRC advice

Greetings, and long time no see... To cut a long story short I managed to get a job in a brewery out of my homebrewing many months ago, but now i'm thinking i can probably start doing my own thing possibly on a part-time basis if not full-time. Any members here who could PM me regarding help...

Split a kit to fill a firkin?

I have an old 9 gallon firkin I was given by a local brewery and was looking to use this for a beer. I also have a two can Wherry kit lying around. Question is, can I split it between two fermenters and top it up with an AG mix to create some new uber-beer? Has anyone else tried to do such a thing?

1853 instructions for porter & stout

I clicked on a ebook link from THBF and was looking through all the free stuff regarding brewing. Then I had a look at this instruction manual from 1853: http://archive.org/details/instructionsfor00clargoog I LOVE reading these old books to see how receipes have changed but this caught my eye...

Dave Line's Greene King Harvest Sweet Brown Ale (or is it?)

Having ordered my grains from Worcester Hop Shop (and very good they are) I decided to make a mini-mash and try out one of Dave Line's receipes from his "Brewing Beers Like Those You Buy" (good little book for referencing I may add) It had been a while since I made a beer on top of the stove. I...

    Buying a boiler

Up until now, I've been using a big stockpot and demijohns to make small batches of BIAB beer but I'd like to upgrade if possible. Any recommendations for an electric boiler? Will any standard catering water boiler (Burco or otherwise) do? Or should I go for one specifically recommended for...

    I'm growing a hop plant!

Until I can produce my own malted grain, spraymalt & semi-decent yeast, I'll be feeding from the hand of my suppliers. HOWEVER after recently faffing around with a long-winded eBay dispute, I finally got my hands on a hop plant (Note: Avoid any supplier who claims to be A+) I bought my hop...

    Ritchies simply export stout review

Having made the Better Brew stout kit (and very nice it was too - although it went very quickly!) I picked up this Ritchies kit off eBay + p&p for about £12. Made it up yesterday & here's what I added to it... 500g Muntons Medium DME 454g jar of Holland & Barrett Malt Extract 3oz Youngs'...

    Brewferm, Pils Review

Brewed this up last night; been wanting to try a Belgian kit for a while now. This Brewferm Pils kit gives you the option of making either 12 or 20 litres; well, my PV only has gallons on it so bearing in mind that I wasn't going to brew 2.64 gallons precisely, I knocked it up to 3 gallons and...

    Hop Plants

I've probably missed the boat on planting for this season but does anyone know where I can get cheap hop plants? I'd like to ideally grow 2-3 in my mahoosive garden. Failing that, does anyone have any cuttings they want rid of? Cheers

    No activity in wheat beer

Some 12+ hours after making a 1 gallon batch of wheat beer, there is no/little activity that I can see happening in the demijohn. This is my frist time making wheat beer - does it take a bit longer? Is it the ingredients used? The ingredient list: 12oz wheat malt 4oz maris otter 8oz Holland &...

    Holland & Barrett

Has anyone tried lightly toasting some of H&B rye/barley/millet flakes and adding them to a brew? I'm making the assumption that you'd have to do a mini-mashi water with them before adding them later on?

Return of the 1 gallon batch

My last 1 gallon batch has turned out surprisingly decent; i calculate it as over 6% ABV and a bitter. Whilst I'm faffing around making a mash tun, deciding what my next 5 gallon brew is, cleaning out a s/h pressure barrel & conditioning an apple & grape turbo cider, I'd like to: a) Try...

    Coolbox 101

There I was thinking about all-grain when today, my neighbour was throwing out an old coolbox. I've successfully separated the inner from the outer; can I use the thin polystyrene layer as is or should I insulate it with something else?

    Bottling bucket

Bit of a numpty question but hopefully someone can calm any fears I have... I transferred my brew from the PV to the bottling bucket, dry-hopped it & primed it. It's been 3 days; leave it or bottle it ASAP? (I'm just trying to get my a brew with more a hopped aroma/taste & less sediment.)

    Bottling bucket

I'd quite like to get myself a second FV/bottling bucket - up until now, the sediment at the bottom of my bottles hasn't been a problem for me but I'd like to produce something with less crud at the bottom when entertaining guests. Any pointers? Worth getting one with a drum tap fitted for ease...
