Return of the 1 gallon batch

My last 1 gallon batch has turned out surprisingly decent; i calculate it as over 6% ABV and a bitter.
Whilst I'm faffing around making a mash tun, deciding what my next 5 gallon brew is, cleaning out a s/h pressure barrel & conditioning an apple & grape turbo cider, I'd like to:

a) Try something using a mix of 3 grains (i have maris otter/wheat/crystal)
b) Enter it into a homebrew contest

Any thoughts/suggestions from anyone?

3 grains is the norm for me maybe 4 sometimes if you think your homebrew is good why not enter a comp.

Any receipe ideas for a 3 grain, Mark?
Also, any homebrew contests you can recommend; haven't cocked up any brews so far but would like some proper feedback. It would also be nice to get some official recognition from my peers! :drink:
