    'Traditional' Cider

I never pick apples for cider, i just pick them up as they fall, the easy way to collect if you want to do most of the tree in one hit is to put two tarps down under the tree to cover the ground, and get a long pole and knock the branches to make the apples fall, if it is a smaller tree give it...

    'Traditional' Cider

No recipe, no secret. As stated previously it just started as a hobby that exploded, I don't know what half the apples I use are as I just acquire them from anyone with an apple tree, so it is a mistury what the flavour will be until I start the barrel, (they are all slightly different) I am...

    'Traditional' Cider

Yeh it started as a hobby making a bit of wine out of things that grow in the hedgerows around the farm, then we put in a load of trees, some apple, when they fruited for the first time I thought apple wine, and still had a load left(maybe a bin full) so thought I would give cider a go, I made 1...

    'Traditional' Cider

Hi, to answer q1 when I was wine making I used to use Milton tablets cheapest I could find, drop the tablet in the dj and fill with hot water out of the tap leave for a while, empty and call it ready to go, never had any problems, but others may disagree ( when I read through threads on hear...

    Bramley Apple Cider

You will get a sweet juice from what ever apples you crush, apple juice is quite high in sugar, you can normally expect around 7% vol from juice alone, do not add any sugar you will just kill the apple flavour, the only juice which will not seem sweet is from bitter cider apples because of the...

    First ferment finished?

Yes it should be fine left like that for as long as you wish (i normally leave it for 12 months), to get it sparkling I believe you add a teaspoon of sugar to each bottle as filling.

    Re-using yeast

I am always reusing yeast for my cider, I just move a couple of pints from the previous batch on to the next, I have been doing this for the last few years.

    Cider making

Thanks for the comments, not sure about the video have to work out how to up load that, and I now need some more apple, just finished that lot this morning (about 60gals) and for a bit more info and another pic. The two buckets fill the press you can see how the apple pulp oxidizes when...

    Cider making

As I have commented and tried to leave advice for other users, and have received questions and comments about my methods, I have finally got around to taking some pics of my equipment, all comments and questions are welcome as I will probably forget something. So just a few apples to start off...

    My Home made apple press

I seem to find that a lot of the apple trees around here do fruit like that, some thing I was reading said if you remove a lot of the crop on a glut year the tree will not use so much energy producing apples, so will not require the second year to recover, and there for will produce a more even...

    My Home made apple press

No I don't drink all of it, friends and neighbors have some and it is always good to carry some in the car to use for currency, if I want something from a different section at work. I also hand out cider to anyone if I collect apples from them. It also works well for me saying to keep it and...

    cider acidity

Time, time and more time! Sorry but that is the answer with cider, patience is your friend, if you can bare to leave it, I find 12 months to be a good target, but leave it for a couple and try it, hopefully you will be able to see an improvement.

    Pear cider

If you have means to pulp them before pressing I would not stew them, just do as you would do with apples, juice wise they produce about the same as apples qty for qty. I have found they through a lot more sediment and do tend to clog the press nets (seem a lot more sticky)

Cider stalled - Any advice please ?

+1 on this, I do add yeast in the form of a culture I have had going for a few years, but that is besides the point. If you have the means to I would add the troublesome one with one of the ones that are working or maybe just swap the odd 5l from one barrel to the other, the working one will...

    unexpected cider brew day

I, by no means consider my self an expert, I have just been playing for the last 3-4 years, trying to improve and I am still improving, my trouble is it takes time before you find out if it was the right mixture or not. Last year the eating apples I get from these two trees that I mentioned...
