Low than expected gravity of 1.006

Used a full fresh pack of yeast (no starter) and no it wasnt an overnight mash, i just did the mash the night before and left it in the pot over night (minus the grains) to save time the next day. Thermometer is quite new and i checked it the first time i used it. Aerated wort and pitched yeast...

Low than expected gravity of 1.006

thanks for replies, OG was 1.039. I didnt do a mash out or cool the mash. After removing the grain bag i topped the pot up a bit with some sparge water, put the lid on and left it over night.

Low than expected gravity of 1.006

Wondered if anyone can explain why my latest BIAB batch has a gravity of 1.006 (after 6 days) instead of the estimated FG of 1.010. I know its an estimate and am not worried as the sample tastes quite nice, just wondered why its happened as never had such a low reading. My process was the same...

    Centennial Brown Ale

I brewed this yesterday, use BIAB method & thought i'd adjusted to 14L. But I undershot OG by about 10 points. I normally get quite a high efficiency but only managed 70%. The sample tasted quite bitter so I took a quick decision and added a jar of honey hoping to off set it. I didnt really...

Any advice on my blonde ale recipe would be welcome

Done quite a few biab brews never been one for getting hung up on the numbers but seem to remember calcutating mash volumes for the 1st few but now i just fill up my pan leaving enough room for the grain and go with that. I lose a couple of litres in the bag, sparge in my fv and use that to top...

    Stove top brewing

I have a 15L and 5L pot. I use the 15L for the mash (with a grain bag) and boil. I squeeze the grain bag and then stick it on top of a metal colander in my fermenter and run the hot water from the 5L pan through it and the use this "sparge" water to top up during the boil. To save a bit of time...

    Honey Ale

The main reason i added it at the end of the boil was that for some reasotn i'd got a jar of set honey so it wouldnt pour out if the jar , if i do another i'll make sure its the clear pourable stuff and will add it at when pitching the yeast

    Honey Ale

I've added honey to a couple of brews. I think the nicest one had about 250 - 300g in a 15L batch. Had some biscuit malt in and combination of fuggles and goldings. Just added the honey a couple of mins from the end of the boil, seemed to add a nice delicate hint of honey.

    Bramling Cross

Hi all, I have been keeping things simple lately hop wise and using only Goldings or Fuggles. Fancy trying a different hop this time and wondered if anyone had used Bramling Cross recently? Recipe will be something like; Marris otter 80% Crystal Malt 10% Biscuit Malt 5% Wheat Malt...

    Possible contamination

Yes, think i might have jinxed it as just opened a 2 litre bottle and it was definetly on the way off; same smell and slight sour taste has developed. Never had this before, where does it normally come from and do you think i will have got rid of it?

    Possible contamination

Quick update. Nothing sinister developed in the bottles and its tasting ok so can't have been infected. Left fermenter full of strong bleach / water solution for a few weeks, to make sure, and just bottled next batch which seemed fine. Cheers all Alan

    Possible contamination

It's down to 1.016 so think i'm going to use terrym's suggestion and bottle it in some water bottles. The sample tastes fine and smells quite normal. Fingers crossed. Thanks for the replies. Alan

    Possible contamination

Hi guys, Brewed a mild using my same equipment and BIAB method, only difference is that i pitched some more dry yeast after about 10 days as it seemed stuck at 1.024 ish. Checked it today and there is quite a strong smell (hard to describe maybe like spray paint??) and a strange white film...

2nd BIAB a bitter with Golden Syrup?

Cheers guys. Did a 12L mash @ 66 and managed to keep the temp constant by wrapping up the pot in towels and some bubble wrap. Then brought it up to 75, took out the bags of grain and ran about 4L of water over them in the fermenter and left them while the pot came up to boil. I added this...

2nd BIAB a bitter with Golden Syrup?

Hi guys, Going to do my 2nd BIAB, first was a dark mild which worked out well. I've got 1.5Kg of pale malt left and my local HBS only sells it in 3kg bags so was going to try using some golden syrup as some of the fermentables and maybe add some flavour? Just a test 12L Batch here goes...

    Summer Hops

thanks for reply. Aiming to make 21 L. Brew Target gives an IBU of 26 and IBU/GU of 0.60. Planning to do it next week. I've got a first attempt at a Timothy Taylor landlord just about ready to bottle, had a couple of pints of it on a recent visit to Whitby and my better half loved it.

    Summer Hops

Hi all, My local HBS has some Summer Hops on special and i thought they might make a nice blonde ale. Has anyone used them? Got 25g of Styrian Golding left no sure if they would complement or maybe help with bittering as i have read summer can be quite "light". Thinking of something...

    First Partial Mash

Great thanks, was thinking of the string idea myself and i'm sure we have some marbles around here somewhere to weigh the bag down.

    First Partial Mash

Gave this ago yesterday. Adjusted the recipe a little as I had enough malt to do 21L and the hops were 6.9 AA. First gravity reading came out at around 1.040 so i guess that pretty good? I've got about 20g of hops left so was thinking of going the whole hog and dry hopping using a muslin...
