Hi guys,

Just thought I would say hello, my name is Marcus and I am based in Surrey.

Been toying with the idea of brewing my own beer for a while, and finally decided to give it a crack.
Looking to go down the BIAB route, however still yet to buy a kit.

I can't decide upon the HBC Stater kit at £108.00 or the Geterbrewed BIAB All Grain Starter Kit with a Mash Kit for £135.00.

Both kits look spot on, but can't seem to find any definitive answer on the web as to which is better than the other. From what I have harvested, I won't really loose with either choice, i'll just be starting with slightly more equipment with the Geterbrewed kit.
I can't seem to tell though however, are they both using the same Peco 32 litre boiler, or are they different? And is it worth spending the extra to get the added equipment?

Appreciate any advice offered, I promise I have searched the forums and web as best I can! :)

Many thanks,

Marcus

If you are completely new to brewing you will need the things included in the Geterbrewed kit. The addition of the false bottom would swing it for me. With the exposed element on the Peco you risk scorching your bag, so having the false bottom is a real bonus. Overall it seems slightly better value.

I bought the kit from HBC and can only comment on that. It is spot on and I will continue to use it until it falls apart, which won't be anytime soon. I bought a hop filter to go with it. It is on sale currently ( although it's been cheaper) plus you get 5% members discount. Also if you sign up to their newsletter they send you a £5 code which you can use alongside the members code

I've got the HBC starter kit, and got the hop filter too, and I'm happy as Larry (or should that be happy as Leon?). Personally, I would do a couple of kits first, just to nail the basics before adding more things that could go wrong. Happy Brewing!

Have you tried talking to the guys in the home brew shop in Aldershot?... Easy drive for you.

I got my stuff there after doing the mashing course... Works a treat.

welcome ameigo :)

from my own experience i would do a kit or 2 first just so you get the basics under your belt first and then can go from strength to strength :)

Hi guys,

Thank you very much for the warm welcome and valuable advice, very much appreciated. :)

I've got a good feeling that the kits use the exact same boiler, which if is the case, then I'll likely go for the Geterbrewed pack just for the extra equipment.

Defiantly going to pop down to the Aldershot store though, didn't realise I had a shop this close!

Glad to see there's plenty of people in Surrey that are into this game. :)

Look, someone has to tell you the truth here. You'll start of dabbling with BIAB, and you'll think it's all fine and dandy. You'll make some beer, you'll drink it, your life will seem normal and you'll congratulate yourself on a job well done. However, you'll already be too far down the slippery slope to ever turn back.

The lure of more advanced mashing will call out to you in your dreams. You'll taste beers you want to make, you'll crave those Imperial versions, and you'll end up investing in even more kit.

Then comes the shiney stuff, conical stuff, and before you know it you'll be willing to sell your body for SS BrewTech kit.

Just accept how it will end up and spend out on a decent boiler and mashtun now. In stainless steel. And a conical fermenter. And heat regulation kit.

You know it makes sense...

Dear Mr Idiot,

I dont know how you ever found out about me, I dont know if we have ever met, but it is uncanny how you have described my obsession with all things shiny.

Do you work for the government or something and have me under surveillance?

Paul

Haha fair statement! To be honest, even in my short research time, I have seen good things about the SS stuff.
Would the below be suitable, and what other additional equipments would I need to purchase? Apologies, complete rookie here.

Actually I think a better proof read may have helped. I think what I linked is just the fermenter and not a bucket that can used for brewing. Correct?

It may not be fancy, but what about this?

Marcus, if I was starting out anew I'd probably get these. The kit could be used for BIAB, and when you realise you want more you can add a mash tun.

The reason I use the larger boiler is because I get fed up cleaning up boil-overs! You can ferment in any food grade platic bin of an appropriate size, unless of course you really want to run for a stainless steel one!!!

Hell, you might as well get this and suck it up in one hit!

Afterwards you will be a happy man ... until you see this

I dont know where all those links were going... but the first one you posted "the brew bucket" is a decent buy. I bought one from the US, and got hit with import tax... then 2 weeks later BrewUK started selling them for the same price. I was gutted. Anyway... good bit of kit and it fits perfectly in my little chest freezer.
