I am looking to make a false bottom for my mastun and also my boiler. I looked in my local hardware store yesterday and found a sheet of 5mm acrylic for a tenner.

I know that it will be fine for the mashtun, but will it be any good for the boiler seeing the temperatures it will be exposed to for an average of 90 minutes. Would it also leak nasties into the brew.

Cheers Neil

some people use a plastic food grade plete drilled full of holes and turned upside down in the mash tun or you could search for a stainless steel plate :D

I have made one out of 5mm acrylic with loads of holes drilled in it (ball Ache use a pillar drill) Works really well Make a cardboard template to get a snug fit then cut with a jig saw or bandsaw. Also put a piece of tubing slit down the length. This will make a better seal. Much better than any slotted copper pipe.
