I'm trying hard (mainly failing) to pick out characteristics of flavour and smell from my own beers and those I've bought.

I picked up a bottle of Porter from a local brewery the other day and cracked open the bottle last night. It tasted great, with a nice mouthfeel and a roasty flavour with a touch of coffee and vanilla.

There was something of the farmyard about the smell though. Nothing that came through in the taste, but a distinct silage whiff on the nose and I'm trying to work out where it might have come from? I'm thinking it must be yeast related?

From some of the 'off flavour guides' it sounds like sulphur/hydrogen sulphide

Although I've read than some of the lambic/wild yeast strains of yeast like brett can smell like horse blanket

"Some have described it as having a "barnyard" or "wet horse blanket" flavor."

I'm thinking it's most likely to be a conditioning issue linked to sulphur! Cheers for the links!
