Hi all,

Will be using protofloc on the weekend for the first time.. I'm Just looking for alittle advice.

On the pack it says 1 tablet per 5gal of wort, but I've read more than once, that people use a quarter of a tablet per 5gal..

Which is the correct amount, or what are the pros and cons of using one or the other? :wha:

Many thanks :thumb:

half a tablet is more than sufficient for a 5 gall brew. It will not hurt anything if you use 1 tablet.

If you use too much you may notice what look like lumps of cauliflower in your beer though

I use half a tablet for 10 gallons :thumb:

I've always successfully used a 1/4 tablet per 5 gallons added at 15 minutes. I'll move that to 10 minutes now but have found the quantity to be sufficient.

do you guys crush them or just chuck them in? as i put half a tab in my first AG batch, I broke it in to quarters and ad the end i found 2 jelly like blobs (Resembled translucent fruit pastilles) was wondering if this was the protofloc

I use granules. Usually about 0.8 grammars which would equate to just less than half a tablet.

I've always used one tab per batch, but am so tight, I may take to cutting them in half from now on. As Ebeneezer said "tuppence is tuppence", having just removed the pennies from the eyes of his late business partner, Marley.

Do not try biting the tablets in half... if bits fall in your mouth they're sort of fizzy and taste like a horrible childhood holiday in Tenby.

There's a topic...how do you cut your protofloc in half.....??
Ummmmm..... teefs for a while, then knifes. I lay it on the chopping board like some sacrifice and lay the blade across it and swiftly bear down until the deed is done.

Then spend half an hour looking where the one frikkin half fired off to. Oh, it's in the cats' dish stuck against some manky jelly, just like the last three times. yay!

Just out of interest first time I used them I had a huge amount of true. However the beer is really clear. Do you get less clarity if you put less in?

Half a tablet is enough, just wasting it if using more, what it does is coagulate the proteins in the wort so running off after the boil, the trub is what you have, hopefully left behind in the kettle.

Using it less minutes before the end is also recommended. Last 5 minutes over 15 as it starts to break down again.
