I have been reading that lots of people seem to put there FV somewhere dark when the yeast is doing it stuff.

Does this matter at all? Will the light have some ill effect on the taste of the final brew?
 
You should be fine with cider :thumb:

It's probably not good practice to leave any fermenter in direct sunlight but the issue of skunking only relates to hops, they don't take kindly to UV light

Red wines should be kept in subdued light or they tend to go a bit brown.
