I used the English ale yeast in a strong stout recently and it was fine. I lack the experience to tell you if it was better or worse than any other, but certainly it did everything I expected it to.
 
I've just thrown a Burton Union into a Wilko's Hoppy Copper, I'll let you know if it improves things.
 
I've just racked a batch for lagering using the bohemian lager yeast. Fermented quickly and hit the beersmith predicted f.g. tasted good on racking too.
