I've just put my first brew in my newly made fermentation fridge.
I've positioned the temp sensor against the side of the FV, under a couple of layers of bubble wrap.
I've also seen people put it in a separate plastic bottle filled with sanitiser.

Is one more beneficial than the other?

I have read many threads about temperature probe placement and have never read one that suggested putting it in a bottle of sanitiser or any other liquid was better than sticking it to the side as you have done, stick with your method as its the one most people here use. :thumba:

You have done the right thing. The FV will warm up during fermentation so no good putting it in a bottle of water. You need it taped on the side. I have found it to be reasonably accurate when i have tested it.
I however do use a bottle in my kegerator otherwise if dangling the fridge can turn on every time you open the door.

It's the beer you want the fermentation temperature of so the fermenter is where it should go. I stick mine on with a big wadge of blu tak. I pretend I'm putting a fuse into some semtex when I shove it on the side then start my stopwatch and slink away saying something like "I hop this doesn't cause too many headaches..."

I keep the real semtex in a different drawer, clearly.
 
The measured difference between the air temp and liquid temp can be a few degrees out easily during fermentation. This is easily proven and has been times over. With the tilt device I see a significant difference.

Both the STC and tilt are calibrated within .1 of a degree against a thermapen.

If you really want to nail down the detail of your process, the sensor has to go on the side and insulated at a bare minimum.

A thermowell will achieve even greater accuracy and see further differences.
