"That abuse is unfair on local communities forced to absorb thousands of illegal arrivals and the pressure on public services and social cohesion that this entails.

"It is unfair on taxpayers who foot the hotel bill currently running to £6 million a day, that could rise to £32 million a day by 2026, for people who have broken into this country.

>80% of them are not illegal, and the hotel bill is a function of how long the Home Office takes to process them, which has soared in recent years (it's pushing 2 years IIRC), because they're more interested in newspaper headlines than in doing their actual job. To get an idea of how incompetent they are, take a look at the inspection report that was released today. I wonder why Braverman feels the need to distract from its release? Truly the empty vessels make the most noise.

it never happened when we were in the eu thought or am I missing something?
You're missing something, although perhaps the newspapers you read had no interest in telling you that.

The short version is that whilst we were EU members we were part of something called the Dublin Protocol, which meant that you could only claim asylum once in the EU. So if someone tried to claim asylum in France and failed, and then crossed the Channel, we could (and did) send them straight back to France, so there was no incentive for them to come in the first place.

Brexit reversed those incentives, it means that the UK offers a second bite of the cherry so since Brexit they have every incentive to try to come here.

Not all of the older generation, my grandad died almost to the day last year at 100, thought Brexit was a terrible idea, one of the many reasons for that was because as someone who landed on Gold Beach in 1944 he saw what a divided Europe could be.

I wasn't having a dig at you, i agree with your grandad, a united Europe is great and it is not the people who are dividing it, it's the bloody people who run it who are doing this, you here the same from ordinary folks in Europe as you do here, i remember being in Denmark way back in 81 talking to Danes and they would comment on it being a club for the French and Germans, i think the french have changed the ruling class are terrified of having a ref so yeah Europe is divided but not by people

Police investigate Tory 'jingle and mingle' party

The Metropolitan Police is reopening an investigation into breaches of Covid regulations at a Christmas party at Conservative Party HQ.
A video of the gathering, where aides were invited to "jingle and mingle", was published by the Sunday Mirror.
Police say they will not investigate alleged gatherings at the prime minister's country home, Chequers, when Boris Johnson was PM.
But they are now investigating an event in Parliament on 8 December 2020.
According to the Guido Fawkes website, this event involved Conservative backbencher Sir Bernard Jenkin.
Sir Bernard sits on the Commons Privileges Committee, which last month published a highly critical report about Mr Johnson.
Sir Bernard told the BBC it was not appropriate to comment on an ongoing investigation.
Separately, Conservative MP Virginia Crosbie issued an apology for attending the event while Covid restrictions were in place.
The Ynys Mon MP confirmed the event took place but said she had not sent out any invitations.

The Met police investigated the December 2020 party at Tory HQ last year, after a picture emerged showing former London mayoral candidate Shaun Bailey and Tory aides raising glasses besides buffet food, when indoor socialising was banned.
In November, the Met said they were taking no further action against Mr Bailey or the others pictured.
They have now said they are reopening their inquiry, as the video published by The Mirror had not previously been provided to officers.
An invitation to the event seen by the BBC invited people to a "jingle and mingle" party.
Mr Bailey said he apologised "unreservedly" for the event, which he said "turned into something" after he had left.
He claimed he was "very upset about the video" as he had "never seen it before".

  1. Labour has won the Selby and Ainsty by-election, overturning a majority of 20,137 votes - the biggest it has ever overcome at a by-election
  2. Keir Mather becomes the youngest MP currently in the House of Commons, at 25 years old
  3. It comes after the Liberal Democrats won the Somerton and Frome by-election by more than 11,000 votes
  4. Party leader Sir Ed Davey said the party was "firmly back" in the West Country after Sarah Dyke overturned a Conservative majority of 19,000 votes
  5. But the Conservatives narrowly held off Labour in Boris Johnson's former Uxbridge and South Ruislip constituency by 495 votes after a recount
  6. Labour had hoped to win the seat but blamed the loss on the expansion of the Ultra Low Emissions Zone (ULEZ) in the capital under London Mayor Sadiq Khan
  7. The by-elections were triggered by the resignations of all three sitting Conservative MPs

Im ******** myself if labour win, absolute nightmare senario, :laugh8: :laugh8: acheers.

You wont be the only one but many will not want to voice it here, if they do get in and things stay the same or get worse they will never get in again this is their big chance to show us they will do what they have said they would, i hope we find out after the next GE.

I have little doubt that things will get worse before they get better, regardless of party in power. This country is in decline i'm afraid to say, however at least if labour get in it'll be someone else making mistakes for a change, and people who for the most part have less malevolent intentions than those in charge at the moment.

She finally leaves and gives the PM both barrels on the way -

(I doubt many of us could have put it better)

In a criticism of Mr Sunak's leadership, she said: "Since you took office a year ago, the country is run by a zombie Parliament where nothing meaningful has happened.

"You have no mandate from the people and the government is adrift. You have squandered the goodwill of the nation, for what?"
She continued: "It is a fact that there is no affection for [Labour leader] Keir Starmer out on the doorstep. He does not have the winning X factor qualities of a Thatcher, Blair or a Boris Johnson, and sadly, prime minister, neither do you."

Your actions have left some 200 or more of my MP colleagues to face an electoral tsunami and the loss of their livelihoods, because in your impatience to become prime minister you put your personal ambition above the stability of the country and our economy.

Nadine Dorries has resigned from the Commons, more than two months after pledging to go "with immediate effect".

She launched a blistering attack on Rishi Sunak in her resignation statement, telling the prime minister "history will not judge you kindly".
The Mid Bedfordshire MP first announced her intention to quit on 9 June.
She accused Mr Sunak of abandoning "the fundamental principles of Conservatism" and said the country was now run by a "zombie Parliament".
Ms Dorries, whose salary as an MP is £86,584, had come under increasing pressure to act on her promise to resign as she had not spoken in the Commons since June 2022.
The former nurse said she had submitted her resignation letter to the prime minister and published the eviscerating text on the Daily Mail's subscription service Mail+.
Despite saying she would quit with immediate effect, Ms Dorries subsequently said she wanted to find out why she was refused a seat in the House of Lords.
It was widely thought she would be made a peer by former Prime Minister Boris Johnson in his resignation honours list.
In a lengthy statement Ms Dorries accused Mr Sunak of "demeaning his office by opening the gates to whip up a public frenzy" against her.
This, she said, resulted in "the police having to visit my home and contact

"Bewildered, we look in vain for the grand political vision for the people of this great country to hold on to, that would make all this disruption and subsequent inertia worthwhile, and we find absolutely nothing."
Flitwick and Shefford town councils in her Mid Bedfordshire constituency had both urged Ms Dorries to stand down immediately, saying she had "abandoned the local area".
Shefford's mayor, Ken Pollard, told the BBC her constituency office had closed a few years ago and was now a dance studio.
"It got to the point where it was difficult to contact Nadine on any level," he said.
In her statement, Ms Dorries disputes this, saying: " My team of caseworkers and I have continued to work for my constituents faithfully and diligently to this day."
