I left the last one of these for 3 weeks in the fv before hopping for 5 days (I had a decent stock built up).

IIRC the instructions suggest waiting for 1.010 before dry hopping.
 
Yesterday i barreled a Cwtch, i emptied the four hop sachets in to the barrel then added the brew and 100gms of sugar and gave it a good stir without splashing.

This afternoon i tried a drop and its pressurized lovely. There were a few bits of hops in it but the second glass was bit free. If it tasted good after one day its going to be fantastic in 2 months.

My AIPA is still bubbling after 3 weeks probably less than once an hour. I do not test it or remove the airlock until i barrel it after 4 or even 5 weeks.

I use glass carboys and its amazing to be able to see what is going on without exposing the brew to air. I leave it until it appears completely flat. Because i havnt taken samples to test and faff about with it, the CO2 layer is intact and the beer is perfectly protected in a sterile environment.

The less you do the better it will be, believe me my beers are fantastic. According to my mates that is.
 
I've successfully done the IPA (with some help from folks on here!), and the APA is just finishing primary. For my next batch I'm aiming to do the IPA again but with a twist... I added extra Citra hops to the first batch, but for this one I fancy adding some Earl Gray tea to give it a different flavour. Any ideas on how to go about this? Should I add some tea bags, or brewed tea to the wort at the beginning? Or should I chuck some in when I dry hop? Any ideas greatly appreciated!
 
Don't use the bags, make the tea from them, cool and add that way.

unless someone knows otherwise you will have to experiment with when is best to add it for your personal taste, but adding later will give more flavour as some, or all could be lost when added to the FV
 
Cheers, yeah was thinking it would be best to add some tea when I dry hop. As to how strong to make it I really ain't sure!
 
I ruined a perfectly good brew by overdoing the spices. if you're going to do it I'd say syphon some off into a demijohn and make a small batch first.

I paid £7 for a pint of IPA made with Earl Grey and it was disgusting. I finished it out of principle but it took quite a while.
 
Whats the thoughts on the hopping of this, drop them in, or bag them up. I am also considering taking 50 grams and making a hop tea then popping them with another 25 grams into a muslin bag and dropping that in the fv.

I know this comes with 100g of hops, but have a John Bull IPA kit sitting in the wings and wonder what difference only using 75g on the AIPA and using 25g to dry hop the John bull one would make. Will the 25g less make that much a noticeable difference?:idea:
 
What did you guys do with the priming sugars, just sling them straight in the PV before adding the brew? Or boil them up? Also should I give the hop bag a right good squeeze to get every last drop out of just whip it out?

I'd bag them up. I find the kit bitter but not particularly hoppy, I'd throw the lot in and buy 100g of Cascade or the like and split that for your John Bull.

I sanitise a Pyrex bowl (a belt and braces measure) boil just enough water to dissolve the sugar and wait for it to cool. I'd then add it and wait a few hours for the yeast to wake up again before bottling.
 
I,m new round here and have a Youngs American IPA on the go. It's on the fourth day in the bucket and has been fine airlock bubbling away regularly after first hour.
Temp is 20c never gone higher than 20.5 or lower than 19.5c.
Today I came home and had a look and the airlock was full of foam and sticky residue.
Thinking it was going to overflow I removed the bung and covered the open hole with foil whilst I rinsed clear the airlock with boiling water.
Its now settled down again bubbling away.
Should I drain some off or am I safe just rinsing the airlock if it happens again.
 
It's fine, the yeast's just getting a little exited with all those sugars to gobble up. Just keep doing what you're doing and release the airlock gently a couple of times a day until it settles down. With that much activity and CO2 around there's next to no chance of infection even if you left the airlock off.

Ok so bottled this tonight, hope to hell it clears some cause it is near enough pea soup.... And tastes nothing like good.... Hoped this would be great. Might still be but ain't holding my breath.

I,ve added the hops now hoping it's going to be OK.
Hopefully pic works, does it look normal?

beer will always look clearer after being in the bottle or keg for a few weeks so id say that's about right. hoppy IPAs look cloudy regardless of conditioning albeit some less than others if you can cold crash (I can't as I don't own a fridge)
id strongly suggest a hydro tube. the reading your getting may not be accurate due to the width of the glass. plus Youl waste less beer
 
Quick question
IPA been in the Pressure Barrell for a few weeks now, will be in a few more yet.
I'm tempted to take it camping with me in a few weeks, question is will this make the beer cloudy again mixing all the sediment up during transportation?

Thanks, not sure what a hydro tube is where will I get one, any brew shop?
