Look upwards...... I use the Malt Miller ( one of our site sponsors ), his prices are reasonable, his service is excellent, and he's a nice chap to talk to.
Your better of purchasing 25kg sack of Maris otter, ( you can with careful choice of brews, get a lot of different beers fromit. Then add a few of the 1kg packs of specialist malts, and then there's you hops and your.......... just keep reminding yourself home brewing is cheap....

Malt Miller every time - the service is fantastic, the quality excellent and he pretty much has what you need.

I echo the other sentiments - get a 25kg bag of your base malts, then 1/2 or 1kg packs of the specialty stuff.

Don't forget things like protofloc and yeast as well!

I always get my malt from the Hop and Grape just as they're conveniently down the road and I've no complaints with the price or the service. I toyed with the idea of building a mill and buying malt direct from Thomas Fawcetts but for now I don't have the capacity or the space to store it safely from damp and rodents. It is a long term aim though as when we get a bigger house I want to expand the brewery to a 1 barrel plant :thumb:

Not sure where you fly out of but if its leeds/bradford, Morley home few have a decent choice of malt & hops and the guy is really helpful. Must admit though I have always had Thos Fawcett malt from Castleford and have always had good results.

also have you got any local micro brew people near you if so contact them ask if you have a look as you intrested in brewing then you may see 25 kg sacks ask them if they will sell you one wink wink that wot i did got it at trade price :D :thumb:

As an aside....with the onset of colder weather I've notice an increase in the mouse population inside the garage ! Time to put some traps down.

I would like to be able to say someone other than malt miller but as above really. Good price (not the cheapest there are cheaper) great service great guy and Crisps MO pale malt is the DD's. :thumb: :thumb:

My opinion is: buy locally. I live in a part of a country without any malting plant. Nearest pick up point of domestic malt is over 100 kms away. Just calculate what's cheaper, pay for delivery by parcel service, pay for gasoline to drive 200 kms or pay slightly higher stock price but save on p&p by buying from a shop 15 mins drive away from home.

Here domestic malt is only marginally cheaper than imported, like £4 per 25 kg sack. Delivery by parcel service is £3.50. Gasoline is £1 per litre, but my Volvo burns 10 litres per 100 kms, that would make £20. I was bad at maths in school, but I can count. ;)

+1 for Malt Miller, I bought the 25kg crisps Maris otter then single kg bags of malts like crystal, chocolate etc.
Excellent service and communication. :thumb:

Folks.
Really appreciate the replies. As an aside, how long would a 25kg bag of crushed malt store for? As I am new to AG, I will spend some time experimenting with different ingredients and would hate to waste anything.
