Hi am Paul from scotland hope you are all well ? just started brewing from malt extract and was wondering how much dried malt extract should i use in 23l I have tried searching online and it's just confusing me now
 
It depends on your recipe and how strong you want it to be. For an average strength beer it'll probably be somewhere about 4kg.
 
Am not really worried about the strength at this point as I am still finding my feet but that's a great starting point thanks :D
 
Welcome aboard! There are plenty of suppliers who sell extract kits with the correct amount of all the ingredients - might be a good place to start, then build up your own recipes once you have got used to the kits?
 
Yeah a did a couple of the kits and went really well thinking am out my depth now though once I get my head round it should be fine :D
 
I am clearly thinking I never used enough dried malt extract is there anything I can do to add it at a later stage? ?
 
If you are going to add more fermentables it is better to do it earlier rather than later in the fermentation. So tell us how much malt you used, whether it was spray/dried or liquid, whether you used any other sugars, and confirm that your start volume was 23 litres, and then folks on here might be able to help.
 
I used about 400 grams of dried malt extract I used the liquid malt extract at the beginning the guy at the brewing store said half the bag and that's what I used :( the start was 23l
 
The full tin of liquid and 2 different types of hops the hydrometer reading before I added the yeast was 40 it said beer ready if that helps
 
Without knowing all the quantities from what you have said, the important bit is the hydrometer reading which you said was '40'. If this is 1.040 and your yeast gets down to 1.010 you will have made beer with an ABV of just over 4%, which as a guide is on the borderline between a 'session' and a 'best' bitter if that helps. If that is the case I would leave it if it were mine, as that would be OK for me.
 
Yes that all sounds about right thanks for all your input and information :D if I have already put hops in would you recommend dry hopping also or just leave it be ?
 
That depends on several things
- did you use a pre-hopped liquid kit
- did you do an extract brew, and if so what quantity of hops did you add and when were they added in the boil
- what style of beer are you making
- what hops have you available, suitable for your style of beer
- and importantly how hoppy do you like your beers.
Dry hopping ups flavour and aroma, not bittering.
Its up to you at the end.

Thank you I will have a read at the recipes a I like to try new things was just in a panic that I messed it up with now enough dry malt extract but hopefully will be ok we live and learn :D
