I've just got back from a three day business trip to the states.

I generally dislike business travel cos it's knackering and dull, and this time the only thing that got me through was the beer: it was bloody brilliant. Can't recall the names of any if the beers I tried (apart from a goose island 312 which was the worst I had), but plenty of IPA and pales were sampled.

Highlights included a session (5.4%!) IPA which tasted like beer crossed with Lilt, in a good way, and an unfiltered galaxy pale which had amazing raw bitterness hat cut through the vile American stodge I had to eat, coupled with intoxicating passion fruit loveliness. Perfect beer for me, not refined by any means but edgy and delicious.

If you're in New York any time soon I can recommend the stone st tavern near wall st, and the growler bar (thought it might be gay, it wasn't) also on stone street.

Hats off to our transatlantic cousins, they make some good beer!

I haven't been to the states for a couple of years but even then was very impressed by the number if breweries making very diverse beers.

Sorry for your disappointment that the Growler wanst a gay bar as you hoped.

They really do!
I had a conversation with someone who told me how all American beer is watery, weak and tasteless.
I said it's not like that any more, I personally think they are leading the way with their pales and iPa's.
My opinion was met with much uncertainty!

I think America leads the way now, it took up micro brewing and didn't **** about, every avenue is being explored over there. It's thanks to them that we have such a wide variety of fresh ingredients to brew with now I reckon, and they have looked at every beer style and experimented and raised the bar considerably.

I spent 3 weeks in New England last year.

Watery, weak and tasteless....I suggest they were drinking Bud, or one of the many 'light' commercial beers. I didn't have a single beer like that.

So many nice beers, in so many nice bars.

Having said that, I was pleased to find an English-style bitter in Portland.

The main problem for me was avoiding the 7% + beers, which given I was there for some new business meetings, would have killed me. Lots of imperial IPAs etc.

I mainly stuck to the pales and IPA as that's what I like best and I wasn't caning it, but you could have loaded up on stouts, ambers, pales, commons, wits, barley wines...

Beer heaven!
