What should schools teach kids about sex?

Just in case anyone wonders what sexual orientations are available to them, we have Males and Females who in turn may choose to be recognised as:

L = Lesbian (a female who prefers the love of another female)
G = Gay (a male who prefers the love of another male)
B = Bi-sexual (a person who moves between the love of both male and female partners)
T = Transgender (a person who has changed a previously identified gender)
Q = Queer (some Gay and Lesbian people apparently wish to reclaim a description that was deemed to be wrong)
I = Intersex (a person who is between a male/female gender change)
A = Androgynous (a person with no wish to be identified by their sexuality)

What I find truly disturbing is that there is apparently no "H-word" in the list!

H = Heterosexual (a male or female who prefers the love of their opposite sex).

BTW, I make that EIGHT different gender descriptions.

If they are only teaching seven then the educationalists are already behind the game! :thumb:

Didn't you know, its no longer hetrosexual, its cisgender! :laugh8:
Maybe to make it easier to say they should just be known as the others.

Two completely separate things... one is gender one is sexual orientation. Most homosexuals are cisgender...

... so we are now up to ELEVEN and they haven't even included "androgynous"! :laugh8:

I loved the comment about "and leaving people out," "How true!" says this particular "H". :thumb:

Same here, these aren't 11 different genders, only a couple of them are.

The point of the term is that it's used to describe specific communities, not list every possible permutation of humanity, if it included "H" it wouldn't mean anything any more, it would just be "People" :laugh8:

My main (not only) problem with this stuff with the state in charge in this case is the totally non scientific non factual ever changing gender part of it, how are teachers even supposed to understand something that never existed.

Someone should really tell these people they don't exist, they might want to look into it!

Also all scientific evidence suggests that being confused over your sexual identity makes you less happy and prone to suicide.

No ****. If you live in a society where a large chunk of it tells you that what you are experiencing either a) doesn't exist and that you're making it up or b) is immoral/sin, of course there are mental health consequences.

Does anyone really think there life would have been better if they had more choice on there sexual identity?

"Choice"? Some people maybe, but most people don't feel they chose the way they experience gender. Do I think their life might be better if there was more openness and acceptance of gender and sexual identity? Sure.

So if they come home from school saying they are a nonbinary pansexual demi-****** swamp person will you know what to do?

For a start I'd have to ask them what the hell it means :laugh8: Then I'd probably ask them to explain why they thought it and how they felt about it. Maybe its a fad and they've forgotten next week, maybe it's not, either way the response is surely trying to be understanding?

What I dont get is where they all come from. So you can be attracted to the opposite sex, your own sex or both. Where do the other 9 come into play :?:

This thread seems to be one big confusing mess with people confusing gender with sexuality, as well as the usual nonsense that comes with political threads.

Sexuality - heterosexual, homosexual, bi-sexual, pansexual, asexual

Gender - male, female, trans (or trans-male and trans-female), non-binary.

It’s really not as difficult as everyone on here is making out.

For people to avoid confusion they'd have to be making an attempt to understand!

I have posted this so the debate can continue any trolling and off topic posts will be removed and as some members have recently found they may also be removed, lets keep it on topic.

I don't think people (on the whole) are not trying to understand but people my age who have always been lead to believe you are either Heterosexual, Homosexual or Bisexual find it difficult to to grasp this -

Asexuality is the lack of sexual attraction to others, or low or absent interest in or desire for sexual activity. It may be considered the lack of a sexual orientation, or one of the variations thereof, alongside heterosexuality, homosexuality and bisexuality

Pansexuality or omnisexuality Is the sexual, romantic or emotional attraction towards people regardless of their sex or gender identity.

Transgender people have a gender identity or gender expression that differs from their assigned sex. Transgender people are sometimes called transsexual if they desire medical assistance to transition from one sex to another.

Non-Binary Defined
Most people – including most transgender people – are either male or female. But some people don't neatly fit into the categories of "man" or "woman," or “male” or “female.” For example, some people have a gender that blends elements of being a man or a woman, or a gender that is different than either male or female. Some people don't identify with any gender. Some people's gender changes over time.
People whose gender is not male or female use many different terms to describe themselves, with non-binary being one of the most common. Other terms include genderqueer, agender, bigender, and more. None of these terms mean exactly the same thing – but all speak to an experience of gender that is not simply male or female.

Back in the day we only had 3 teevee channels and life was a whole lot simpler. And a person was straight or not. Simple. Modern life is rubbish. Dunno who coined that but they're right.

Back in the day there were hardly any gays because they were all hiding in the closet times change Gunge and to be honest if it wasnt for the BBC and papers constantly discussing LGBT i doubt i would give it a second thought as i go about my daily tasks the same as i rarely give Heterosexuality, Homosexuality or Bisexuality a second thought.

The OP asks ...

"What should schools teach kids about sex?"

In view of the responses so far, maybe the question should be ...

"Should schools teach kids that there are multiple choices when considering gender?"

... which I think should be taught before puberty strikes.

Within my own family I can lay claim to:

  • An Uncle who served time in Strangeways Prison in the 1950's for being a homosexual.
  • A Cousin who is a homosexual and currently being treated for AIDs.
  • A Niece who lived as a lesbian for +25 years with a variety of lady partners; and then married a man.
I've also worked alongside a full variety of people and their sexuality has never been of concern to me because they are "people"; however, I do wonder if the latest attempt to find a particular label to hang on oneself is a fad.

BTW, when I was a young lad, I sailed with a homosexual Fireman who stood 6'4" tall, was built like the proverbial "brick outhouse" and was as hard as nails.

Over the years, I have met people who have bragged that they "Beat up a queer who tried to pick me up in a toilet." and whenever I've heard of this act I think of that Fireman ...

... because I have always reckoned that if he had ever tried to pick someone up in a toilet their best option would be to ask for him to be gentle!

Those are sexual orientations not gender. Gender is an entirely different beast. Figuratively and occasionally literally speaking.

Agreed ...

... except that "Transgender", "Genderqueer", "Agender" and "Bigender" are all apparently included in the list being put forward as being something which a person may choose as a label to explain themselves.

Us golden oldies can remember a time when we were taught that only TWO genders (Male and Female) were possible and that everything else was an aberration against nature, illegal and probably a sin against God.

Most of us didn't realise the misery that such a narrow explanation would cause to the people who fell outside these two definitions and I can only hope that improved education will bring about a more tolerant and understanding society.
