    Latest giveaway from Inkbird

I have mine taped to the side of the FV with some insulating material taped to the outside so that it is measuring the FV temp more than the outside air (bubble wrap would probably work too). It seems to maintain a pretty consistent temperature that way.

    Chlorine in tap water

Guys Thanks once again for the always excellent advice. I was clearly trying to be lazy and not have to sanitise another vessel to hold the water I add the Campden tablet too. However, the advice seems pretty clear so I'll give myself a good talking too and do it properly! :D I'll report...

    Chlorine in tap water

Thanks guys - any known downside to using the campden tablets or is it a bit of a 'no-brainer'? Also, given that my process has been to add the (heated) kit ingredients first, followed by a quantity of boiling water, and then the cold tap water, is there any reason that I can't add the...

    Chlorine in tap water

I'm now 2 brews in to my Homebrewing experience and the second was at least drinkable :thumb: For now, I am sticking with home brew kits so that I minimise the variables while I get the hang of things. Unfortunately, my tap water at home can be prone to quite obvious chlorine levels and I...

    Fermentation freezer

Agree with previous comments about avoiding one that is already failing! Also, it is going to depend on the design of the Freezer. A lot of upright freezers have cooling elements that run through fixed shelves, often the top one or two shelves are designed this way to allow for fast freezing...

    DIY Build a Fermentation Refridgerator

It should be down the sink but I'm leaving it in the barrel for a few weeks / months just to see how much conditioning can achieve! I don't have high hopes but interesting experiment !

    DIY Build a Fermentation Refridgerator

I have a ITC-1000 attached to a heat plate and a simple insulation 'box' that I assembled from that cheap foil-backed house insulation you can pick up from any good DIY store. The heating plate and insulated box is easily capable of reaching 30ºC, as I discovered before I bought the...

    DIY Build a Fermentation Refridgerator

Agreed - I always leave a fridge or freezer for 12-24 hours after moving it, to allow the compressor to settle. Don't know the full engineering details but it is just one of those things that was always drummed into me. Clearly, the absence of a failure is compelling proof that I must be right...

    Newbie Pressure Barrel troubleshooting

Hi All In the interests of completeness, I thought I should provide a closer for this thread, in case anyone finds it useful in the future. I think I have the PB correctly sealed and working now, so thanks for all your help. :thumb: I didn't sand or file anything so no PBs were hurt in...

    Newbie Pressure Barrel troubleshooting

Once again guys - thanks for the tips, really appreciated. Seems like I should have put more effort into getting good quality pressure barrels! :-? I'd still be grateful if anybody was able to answer the questions about how tight the metal CO2 valve assembly should be? cheers LB

    Newbie Pressure Barrel troubleshooting

Lol - Noted! I'll leave the sanding as a last resort! Thanks for all the advice guys. One more if I may - how tight should the metal CO2 valve assembly be?

    Newbie Pressure Barrel troubleshooting

Thanks for the advice guys. The barrel is one of the basic ones that you get with a starter kit. I'll check the top and see if it needs smoothing off a bit - too late for the one full of beer though! I worried that I over tightened the first cap (and when I removed it the flat rubber seal was...

    Newbie Pressure Barrel troubleshooting

Hi - yes to using vaseline. I tried just tightening the top to the point of first resistance plus a little bit but that just made the leaking even worse.

    Newbie Pressure Barrel troubleshooting

Hi Guys My first attempt at homebrew is 5 weeks old and I would appreciate some help troubleshooting my attempts to use a pressure barrel! :-? For background, I am using a Wherry Kit with a Gervin ale yeast. It had 2 weeks in the primary FV (reached ~4.5% ABV), 2 weeks in the pressure...

    Secondary fermenting question

Thanks guys - I'm having to brew in the garage, so I have put the pressure keg in the same area that I used for the FV and turned the target temperature range down a little so that it is being kept at 18-19ºC. I was planning to leave that for 2 weeks and then just move the keg to somewhere...

    Secondary fermenting question

Hi all Just transferred my first attempt at homebrew from Primary FV to a pressure keg for secondary fermentation (wherry kit with Gervin ale yeast instead of the one supplied with the kit) . I'm happy that the primary ferment was complete (ABV about 4.5% after 7 days but left in primary...
