    Possible infection ?

One of the brews I was going to bottle this morning looks like it might have an infection but having never seen it before I thought I'd post up some pics and ask, it's like a powdery residue floating on the top. It's a 1 gallon batch and I suppose the question is would you still bottle it ?

    BillyD's Brewdays

Thought I'd do one of these placeholder type threads in case I ever need to look back on something, on Saturday I brewed what will hopefully be a Mango Pale Ale. Plan was: 1.18kg MO 0.2kg Lager malt 0.12kg Carapils Full volume mash for 90 minutes @ about 148F with 9.2 litres of water. 8g...

    Efficiency/Numbers etc

I've moved to doing full volume BIAB recently and have done about 9 brews using the same method. Plugged the details into Brewer's Friend with a 70% efficiency and for the first 6 everything tallied, the last 3 brews though have been way off - one was 8 points off the OG and the last two (using...

Guinness Extra Stout from Wheeler Edition 1

Wonder if anyone can clear something up for me from Brew Your Own Real Ale At Home. The recipe in it for Guinness Extra Stout calls for 37g Challenger and 25g Target at the start of the boil but putting the figures into Brewer's Friend gives a much higher bitterness level than the book, 73IBU to...

    Northern Brewer Chinook IPA

Looking back through the threads on here it was July 2016 when I last brewed any beer, although I have done bits and bats of wine since then. At Xmas I got a surprise prezzy of a Northern Brewer Deluxe Kit and it was the Chinook IPA, so today I got my **** back in gear and got it made. Sort of...

    Strawberry wine, high OG

Apart from a WOW variant I started a few weeks ago I've never made any wine but I do get a lot of strawbs and gooseberries etc foc from someone and so I thought I'd try a strawberry wine. I loosely followed a post by someone whose name I can't remember - was something like old brewer, apologies...

AG#7 60 Minute IPA (Greg Hughes ish)

Last night I had a go at making a slightly altered 60 minute IPA from Greg Hughes and thought I'd take some piccies for once, bit blurred and badly scaled but I blame the Chaplin's. I altered the grain bill slightly and so instead of using 1.2kg of low colour pale I used 1kg of low colour and...

    AG#6 Use What You Have

This is the sixth AG I've done and I still haven't tasted one of them yet! :???: In the mash at the minute is: MO 500g Vienna 300g Weyermann pale 225g Caramunich I 100g A bit of playing with the calculators suggests something in the English Special bitter area if I use: EKG 10g @...

Bank Hol Brew#1 : Vienna thing

    What would you suggest?

I'd been talking to our kid the other day and he had one too many Mr President and ordered a random selection of ingredients for me to use - I was planning on making something with Vienna and Hersbrucker this Friday and then doing Clibit's Brown Ale the week after that but looks like I might try...

    Bottling the bottling

Got up this morning knowing I needed to do my first ever bottling and suddenly became a nervous wreck! It's really uncharacteristic for me but it took about five hours of mulling things over to finally get it done. Good news is that it seemed to go ok and the small taste I had suggested it...

    Beer Brewnight: MO/EKG SMaSH

Been looking forwards to this weekend because hopefully I'm bottling my first AG tomorrow and tonight I'm doing my first non-kit AG. The mash is on and this is the first time I've got some figures that I can aim at as the Brooklyn Brew kits don't bother with measuring gravity. I'm aiming...

    Hops with low AA

As a total newbie I've got some hops coming that have a lower AA than they might normally have and so if I put info into calculators they are suggesting I need to put a lot more into a brew than I thought to get the IBU values. I'm new to this so I'm thinking of just following the amounts and...

    1 Gallon SMaSH

I'm shooting in the dark with this so hopefully someone who actually knows what they are doing will be able to help. I'd like to make a 1 gallon SMaSH and I thought for my first one I would try using MO and EKG. These figures are semi-random but I came up with this : 1kg MO pale 8g EKG...

    Hi from Lancashire

What with manners costing nowt I just thought I'd say a quick hello. I had a few years experience of brewing kits almost 30 years ago and then nothing until the other week when I did an AG Brooklyn Brew Kit the other week followed by another this Friday just gone. I'm aiming to do 1 gallon...
