I believe the name is based on Chateauneuf du Papes, which rose to fame in a tongue-in-cheek dog food advert by Clement Freud, way back in the 1970s. The name was used because it sounded sophisticated, but it's actually a blended wine of variable quality. I tried a Canadian kit version, because the price was vastly reduced and it was ok, but nothing that special, considering the normal price was around £60, and I certainly wouldn't pay that for it.
