Has anybody ever tried brewing with this? The reason I ask is the smaller amounts that are available seem better for a small experimental brew.

I used some in an AG brew recently but only for the last five minutes of the boil to bump up the gravity, I didn't notice any difference to other LME I used to use with kits (except it was unhopped of course), the brew eventually got down from 1074' to 1015' giving 7.8% but it did take quite a while, probably would have anyway though:hmm:

Food grade LME isn't as refined as brew grade LME. It will work, though I suspect your beer will come out cloudier. Taste-wise, some may argue that brew grade LME is superior, but the only way to know is to try.
