How much dead space in the mash tun is to much?

Is that with just water? I think once you have grain in there it will be less as the liquor will be flowing through the bed and hopefully you'll get more syphon effect?
 
My first mash tun had 2.5l dead space with just water and it worked fine. I just added 2.5l yo my mash liquor but as Conon points out its probable less with grain in :thumb:
 
I don't know about brew mate but in beersmith you can enter your dead space for your equipment and it automatically calculates for you
