    Really stupid question

I bought a twin lever corker to bottle my wine, and was wondering if there is some special technique to get it to work properly? I've gone back to the cheapy plastic push in corker as the twin lever one wasnt pushing the corks all the way in. Is it just ****?

    cherry concentrate

Got a wee bottle of this but the label is decidedly light on guidance. As is the website. http://www.brouwland.com/setframes/?l=& ... 4&shwlnk=0 :hmm: Anyone used this before and can suggest how much to use? Its going in a bock brewed with whitelabs oktoberfest yeast.

    smoked malt beer

Found a recipe for a smoked beer with juniper. Now this recipe is quite old (ie hundreds of years) and it calls for 100% of grain to be smoked. Which it would have been cos of the kilning method. But surely with modern smoked malt this would be undrinkable?

    Competition feedback on beers

Results of a homebrew comp were announced last thursday, in which I had 4 beers entered. 1 was chucked in just to fill a category even tho I wasnt that impressed with it (bit pointless) one was given good comments, but wrong style apparently. Was told if it had been in right category would have...

    Kohatu IPA

Bought some kohatu, as I liked the sound of it! (incidently, after collecting my 25kg bag of grain from courier, I gotta ask - Rob is built like Arnie in his prime, right? ) Anyhoo, I was wondering if anyone had any suggestions on hopping rates, or complimentary hops. Bought NZ pacifica...

    crushed grain lifespan

I've been thinkin on getting a 25kg bag of Maris otter, but having no mill, I'd need it crushed. How long would it last for? It'd be kept in a tightly lidded tub indoors so warm and dry. At about 4kg per brew, that's 6 batches and I don't brew every weekend, so possibly 3 months. Would it be ok...

    Making a 'creamy' beer

I want to make a beer that is, for want of a better description, velvety, creamy and smooth. Preferably a pale ale. Can I simply bung a load of wheat and oat in? I read too much oat can lead to 'astringent' flavour. How much is too much in a 5 gallon brewlength?

    Banana beer?

Had a random thought pop into my head about making a banoffee beer. Like a modified maltier caley 80/- with banana. Not sure about the banana bit tho. Guy at lhbs suggested finding a banana wine recipe. So I know what to do with the bananas, I'm just not sure how much for a 5 gallon batch. 3 1/2...

    Wine cooler for lagering?

I'm wondering if I could use a wine cooler 'fridge' for brewing with lager type yeast. One I'm eying up is adjustable between 10-18 c It runs with about 70% humidity. Would that be an issue? Its actually for meat/sausage curing I was looking, but two birds, one stone and all that!

    Should I bin the bucket?

Just discovered I may not have cleaned out one of my fermentation buckets properly after the last time. Just opened it and was greeted by a waft of vinegar, and some mould growing on the side. Worried about acetobacter thingies. Is the bucket redeemable or should I bin it? (Its white plastic...

Whats the difference between stout and porter?

 Seriously tho, I've googled and come up with a pile of contradictory answers, most of which are prob made up.

    Chocolate espresso stout

Had a double espresso stout wee while back and loved it, so wanting to go one step further and bung some chocolate in too. Found this recipe: (translated from american to british! :D ) 6 gallon batch. 4kg maris otter 1kg flaked barley 0.5kg roasted barley 0.5kg crystal (120) 0.25kg black malt...

A real woman is a man's best friend. She will never stand him up & never let him down. She will reassure him when he feels insecure & comfort him after a bad day. She will inspire him to do things he never thought he could do. She will enable him to express deepest emotions & give in to his most...

    Force carbonating in Minikeg

Just got my partystar deluxe tap on friday, and got fired into a keg thats been patiently waiting since I broke the crappy flimsy plastic tap and been having some issues. The beer comes out ridiculously slowly and I'm pretty convinced its cos of the quantity of sediment in the bottom of the keg...

    Kettle element life expectancy

How long do folk find these last? On my 5th brew and I just failed to get a 60 min boil. Hopefully beer will come out acceptable after 45 min boil. I have two homebase value elements in a fv, and use 2 to get up to temp and one for boil. Last time, one cut out after 35 mins so i switched to...

    Kölsch

After a very pleasant weekend in Köln, and falling in love with the brauhaus's where beer keeps coming automatically til you either say no more, or fall over, I've decided to have a bash at making it. I think the favourite was probably the Früh Kölsch. My brief googling shows it uses top...

    Wheres my flavour going?!

Made an IPA, and while bottling it had a sneaky taste and it was a cracker. Floral/fruity taste and a good rounded beer. Forward a couple weeks and, whilst still a decent beer, its lost huge amounts of flavour. Has to be the first beer you have or it'll taste lifeless and bland. Next beer was a...

    Beer-king minikeg tap

for 45 quid its a bit cheap, naff, and fragile isn't it? Second use and the bit the tap lever attaches to broke off. Removing it from keg and the draw tube snaps off (at the thread on the tap so cant just replace the tube) None too happy at all. Is there a more robust solution? (that doesn't...
