i'd say there's just a lot of hop oil flavour in there overall and the cascade fruitiness is coming through calum - millennium seems to be a herbal bittering hop. hey, maybe it's something we can all learn from, you don't need a tonne of cascade for IPA flavour!

It was "bigger" in flavour than cascade, fruit, fruit, fruit and more fruit... Could be one of those other hops is a dark horse as a late one maybe??

Nice review Grumpy Jack. Well done Mr 4D!

I make that the 28th beer report out of 30 beers in the swap.

I have still to review and still to be reviewed so there's your 2!

Was on holiday so only sent mine last week. My swap is settling, will drink 2moro maybe!

2D:
A fine deep cream coffee coloured head initially threatens to overflow the glass but subsides quickly. In colour the beer is a deep rich and dark brown, not totally clear, but it was a late arrival and I couldn't wait any longer!

On the nose there are heaps of deep burnt chocolate and coffee tones.

In flavour, the coffee and dark chocolate malt comes through, almost a specialist chilli chocolate style of flavour. Appearing to be a robust and chewy brew its actually a little thinner than expected and not quite as deep and complex as the nose suggested. Subtler flavours come through in the back of the beer, but still along the chocolate range with a slight tang of aftertaste.

:drink:

As a bit of a lover of darker beers, this is a really rather nice experience and not out of place even on this summer evening. SWMBO, who is NOT a fan of darker ales, didn't turn her nose up & had a sniff and a taste and said that the overwhelming flavour was of expensive dark chocolate; something like Green & Black's... I believe her, what she doesn't know about chocolate ain't worth knowing! :P

Overall, a very good beer for late night supping or perhaps, a winter afternoon by the fire.

Thanks for the review, glad you enjoyed it. Apologies for the state of the bottle with multiple old labels on it but was already past the deadline when I got back from holiday so rushed it off.

Your nose and taste-buds are spot on, chocolate & espresso beer. There's loads of chocolate malt as well as 100% cocoa powder and coarsely ground brazillian coffee beans. It is a bit thinner, and in my opinion too carbonated, but I'm still pretty happy with it as it was a bit of an experimental brew. Glad you liked it!

Is that an old label still on the bottle I see ? Looks like label from the st Andrew's brewing co . Tried a few of there beers and really nice . Can't wait for secret Santa now as I'm going to be more prepared

4D, 'Arf Nelson was mine. I'm glad you liked it, Grumpy Jack!
It was my first use of Nelson Sauvin and I was suprised that I didn't get the flavour out of the hops in the way I had hoped. The inspiration was Thwaites Half Nelson, a seasonal ale which my well be in the pubs at the moment. I have use the rest of my Nelson S in combination with Citra and they compliment each other better than the NS/Northern brewer in 4D.

I'm very much looking forwards to the next swap and thanks again to the organisers. :thumb: Reading the reviews has been great, just wish I'd had a glass of each reviewed beer, just so I could compare notes, of course.

30 bottles posted in the Beer Swap, and 30 bottles delivered safely by couriers and Royal Mail, it seems!

I can't quite bring myself to give the couriers a  , at the prices many will have paid, but it bodes well for future swaps - especially as we're all probably making sure we fill the odd 300ml bottle or PET. I imagine there is a stash of cardboard tubes around the country too, ready to roll again in the Secret Santa!

it certainly is, we stock their beers in my restaurant so I pretty much have a limitless supply of them. They are cracking beers, all done by the one guy, nice chap too. Labels are a bugger to get off!

Yea I believe his premises are actually in glenrothes at the moment where I'm from I've only tried fife gold and the oatmeal stout which I got at a farmers market need to try his others

Yeah he does all the farmer's markets in Fife. Yeah all his beers are really good, try any if you get the chance :thumb:

What's your restaurant called ? Is it in St Andrew's ? If so next time I'm up I'll need to nip in for a bite to eat and a pint

Now to plan for a brew that will be nicely matured for Christmas!

NellyP
for your beer 1B you provided a link to your brewday thread.
In that thread, the pix of the brewday are gone.
Could you repost them please?
Thanks.

The Glass House on North St., aye pop in we do crackin rustic pizzas which go great with an IPA!

Been mental over the last few weeks so I didn't get a chance to do this properly.

I think I speak for everyone who took part in the beerswap (and probably those who took part in the wineswap too but I haven't followed the thread) when I say that this event has been organised perfectly, marketed effectively and run with military precision.

A job very well done. Lots of beer swapped, lots of beer drunk, lots of brewers inspired. You can't say fairer than that!

I propose a vote of thanks for Kinleycat and morethanworts. Hats off to you gentlemen and bring on the next one!!!

:hat:

Looks like a fantastic effort all round. I didn't quite have anything ready for this one, being new to brewing, but I'll be saving a bottle of my finest to date, and if I brew nothing to top it then someone gets one for secret santa - looking forward to it.
