I stand corrected. My first barrel (9 gallon) had a missing band which I replaced with mild steel and a rivet. To keep it in place, I used short copper roves, then primed and painted. That fixed 1 of the leaks. It has remained watertight for years. It was initially filled with white wine with mediocre results, but red wine (pinot noir) did quite well. Even that needed another year in bottle to come up to scratch.
