Awesome :onechug:@chopps must feel unbelievable to see the first brew pitched and fermenting - huge round of applause. Bit disappointed not to see you tearing open 200 bags of SO-4 hahaha athumb..
I'm too nervous how it will turn out to feel anything much, for now...
I will celebrate once I can taste it.

OG, pH and volume were on the money. The yeast is frothing... it WILL be fine mate. Have faith - the Beer Gods are with you wink...

Obvious thought on the bitterness of gyle 1 - alpha extract? If the likes of Cloudwater are using it for their main bittering charge, there's no shame in using it for adjusting bitterness to improve consistency of product (consistency is a real issue for smaller breweries). Obviously there may be scaling issues, but I found that the Ritchies product increased bitterness at the equivalent of 1 IBU from 5ml in 300 litres :

On the refractometer - it's probably not going to be that badly out, but have you calibrated it in water, and do you have a wort correction factor for it?

Another great episode. My two pennith worth; Could you fit an over flow on that HLT? I would consider knocking up some SOP's before your next brew. I know they will need to flex as you get to know your kit, and might make it all a bit more like boring work rather than fun, but it might help with things like forgetting the Protofloc, not having hops ready?

Top brewday, thanks for the namecheck and a great video - there’s definitely something irresistible about watching other people doing hard work athumb..
Do you think it might it be worth just a very quick touch with a lighter flame around that stretched bit of JG tubing, just to forestall the risk of any surface cracks growing to full-thickness ones?
OMG how many times have I started filling my Burco and thought “why’s my foot getting wet?”…

@Northern_Brewer Great advice as always, thanks. The refractometer and HMRC hydrometers match (without the presence of alcohol) and I just don't use the refractometer once fermentation has started. The iSpindel (that I keep calling a Tilt) used to also be accurate but has drifted now at lower SG. Once at around 1.030 I can only use it to determine when fermentation has stopped rather than to determine if we reached FG. Looking into alpha extract but I hope to just get it right with the hops as we learn and improve the process.

@marshbrewer Yes! I will be installing an overflow possibly into the IBC if I can rig it up, and a good old fashioned ball cock for belt and braces. As for the SOP... yes. Just lazy. Brewfather will even sound an alarm and tell me whats next but I stopped using it at home as there were alarms going off all over the house on every device I had it installed on. Laptops, iPads, phones etc. Need to fix that :) Cheers.

@Chippy_Tea You are very welcome. When I do the 'how it all started' video at 1000 subs I will have a lot more to say about the forum. I have about 100 left to find. Would be really nice if I can get a few aspiring homebrewers to come over here after watching, to join the fun. I learned so much here and I doubt I would have even attempted this without the benefit of that.

@The-Engineer-That-Brews Thanks to you mate. The controller we roughed out works great so far, just on the cold side. I have a pump power problem getting enough 'push' up the FV and a selection of pumps to test out in the evenings this week. You are the second person recommending that I set fire to things to solve a problem. Might try this as it seems a popular quick fix for many issues.

Thanks everyone.

I have just started watching the episodes in reverse, it's rather entertaining. Congratulations on getting it up and running. Good luck on the Murgy Straight, I reckon it'll be good
