Hi all, am brewing Greg Hughes Black ipa soon. The recipe says to use wyeast 1187 Ringwood yeast, what would be the closest dry yeast equivalent?

If you have the book, then his Yeast comparison chart on Page 24 lists Fermentis SO4 as the dried equivalent
On the next row he lists Danstar Nottingham
 
As this recipe is mostly about the hops and a little interest from the malt, I'd go with a clean yeast that doesn't get in the way. Nottingham tends to mute the hops a little, so S04 would be a better choice. However, I dislike S04 generally as apart from good flocculation and preserving more sweetness than Notty it has little else going for it. US05 would be a much better choice.
 
I just recently made this (bottled last Thursday) and I also used us-05
Smelt amazing at bottling time

That's controversial. I kind understand who uses this definition.

In the brewers friend recipe editor, my recipes usually fall in the "black IPA" or Foreign Extra Stout.

Anyway, reading stuff around, black IPA should be an IPA with just more colour. Same to brown/red.

If it has an roasted or caramel character, it shouldn't be an IPA anymore. But for some ABV and IBU range, is stronger than a regular stout/porter, but lighter than an Imperial stout. So it's hard to define.
