My first car was a 1970 Mark II Ford Cortina.
It was blue, but

Wish I had a grey Cortina
Whiplash aerial, racing trim
Cortina owner - no one meaner
Wish that I could be like him

Twin exhaust and rusty bumper
Chewing gum at traffic light
Stop at red but leave on amber
Grey Cortina outa sight

Wish I had a grey Cortina
Whiplash aerial, racing trim
Cortina owner - no one meaner
Wish that I could be like him

Furlined seats and lettered windscreen
Elbow on the windowsill
Eight track blazing Brucie Springsteen
Bomber jacket, dressed to kill

Wish I had a grey Cortina
Whiplash aerial, racing trim
Cortina owner - no one meaner
Wish that I could be like him

Never cop a parking ticket
Never seem to show its age
Speed police too slow to nick it
Grey Cortina got it made

Wish I had a grey Cortina
Whiplash aerial, racing trim
Cortina owner - no one meaner
Wish that I could be like him

Mine was a sh1t brown Hillman imp, with a white fibreglass bonnet or was it a boot lid? It was at the front and as you know not an engine cover. Bought it for £30, sold it for £200.

Mine was a 1983 mustard yellow mk3 escort 1.3L that mum gave me on my 18th birthday
It was a horrible shed, properly broken in every way with rust, dents, knackered suspension and an engine that lasted 6 months before seizing solid.

Mine was mk2 Fiesta in blue. Parents bought it for me when I was 17.

Shortly changed it for a 205 gt (not gti) couldn't get insurance so flipped it settling on a Nova.

Peugeot 106 white, think it was a 1.1

EDIT: Actually, no, I had a white mk3 Fiesta 1.3i Mreg. I completely forgot that one 🤦

Mrs cwrw had a Sunbeam hatchback when we first got together, but first car we got together was a Peugeot 305 van. Bought it new and drove it til it wasn't worth fixing for the MOT at which point I swapped it with a guy for a 10 by 8 garden shed.

Mine was a 1998 "S" reg Morris Marina 1.3. It was that good a car I sold it to my brother

I had a hand me down Mini Metro from one of my brothers, must have been end of 80's/early 90's.
Not long after I got rid of it a few years later I saw one which had been rear ended - decided never to drive one again after seeing the state it was in.
That said it was reliable and easy to
maintain. After that it was a succession of Escorts and Astras, most memorable of which had a red and orange flash down the side in a starsky & Hutch style
(though of course it was an absolute dog and required constant tinkering !)

Remember when you could fix your own car as they didn't have computers and fancy bolts you cannot use a normal spanners/sockets on, doing your own car maintain on the front street back then was the norm you only paid a garage when you ran out of DIY skill :laugh8:

Yep, a Haynes manual was also usually required in my case.

I had a few of those, points gap, plug gap, suppressors for radio interference etc those were the days :D, no one had a torque wrench but we managed ok without one.

This absolute piece of turd..... It had a 800cc engine, if I had a heavy load i'd have to put it into first gear to get up some of the hills on the A30 home. Delighted when I totalled it on the A60 in Nottingham.

A 1973 Mini Clubman Estate. I bought it around 1980 when I was gigging with a band at weekends.
It looked like this:

I saw Tom in a Belfast pub in the early 1990's, during an acoustic tour he did. There were no more than 20 people turned up for the gig. Tom got a pint and sat down at every table before the gig started and had a chat. I asked if he would play Grey Cortina, he raised an eyebrow and said,"on an acoustic guitar? ... OK, I'll give it a whirl", and he did. It was fantastic!

I had a bronze (yep another **** brown) w reg fiat 127 palio passed down from my grandad.
It had a big fabric sun roof that enabled rear passengers to stand up, an automatic choke that made it an absolute pig to start & I managed to keep it relatively rust free apart from the bottom corners of the windscreen.
Had it from 2nd year at uni '87 through until we got our house, married somewhen about '93/4 then it sat on the driveway a further year or so until my uncle took it away on a trailer to tinker with.
