If anyone was having trouble with the GF app and one of the more recent versions of android/chrome there is a new beta app version out that looks to have fixed the issue, as this is a beta there may be some issues with lost data from saved recipes so best to have saved copies separate from the app elsewhere.

The new beta is in the google play store.

Would this issue affect recipes you've uploaded to the grainfather site from a desktop?

This is for the GF connect box and app. It's a Beta so there could potentially be a few issues, until a Beta test is complete there is no way of knowing. If in any doubt always back up or create a second account and import any data over. If you are using the original controller and the GF site there should not be any problem.

The following is from there email Re this

PLEASE READ CAREFULLY BEFORE INSTALLING THIS APP BETA UPDATE*
Would you like to help us test the Android App's new beta update?

We have been working hard to improve our Grainfather Connect app and one of the most requested ehancements was the ability to upload local session and recipe data to a cloud account.

As such we have created a new beta update for the Grainfather Connect app that once installed will automatically migrate you local data to your Grainfather cloud account on our Brewing Community.

If you would like to help us test this new update, please continue reading below for more information.

*Warning potential data loss possible
Although we strive to build and test our software products to the upmost scrutiny, due to the abundant variation in devices available we cannot guarantee or be liable for any local data loss that may occur when installing and testing this beta update.

That said, please be aware that this version has undergone extensive internal and closed beta testing prior to this public beta release. All your recipes that have been created using the Grainfather Recipe Creator will not be affected.

1. Android app update details:
This update removes the separation between 'cloud' and 'local' recipes and sessions.

Previously, if you imported a beerXML recipe within the app itself, it would be stored locally on the phone under the 'imported recipe' group (and not accessible via your online brewing community account).
Also if you created a brew session on the app with an imported recipe, the brew session would have been stored locally on the phone too. Grain Kit recipes (that were included in the app) were also stored locally and turned into 'local' sessions.
With this version of the app, if you import a beerXML recipe into the app, it will upload the recipe directly into the Grainfather cloud/brewing community. It will be handled the same as a cloud recipe and be displayed in the cloud recipe section on the app. This means that brewing it will create a cloud session rather than local session, so you will be able to access it via the online brewing community, or even another device logged into the same account.

Please note that any recipes or brew sessions uploaded automatically from the app will be set to private. We will be adding the ability to change this to public from the app but for now, you will need to make this change in the Brewing Community/Recipe Creator website.

We are making a similar change to Grain Kit recipes. Instead of using locally stored Grain Kit recipes, they will now be pulled from the Grainfather recipe account, so it will always be up to date and brewing those will also turn into cloud brew sessions.

***Please note that recipes created using the Grainfather Recipe creator will not be affected and sessions created using quick profiles will still only be saved locally. We will be looking at phasing out quick profiles in the future.

2. Installation notes:
We recommend to take a screen shot of your local sessions list on the app, to help us identify any issues should they occur.

Once downloaded, the app update will begin the migration process automatically - please see images below for reference of what to expect to see.
It will process and upload any;

  • imported recipes
  • sessions from those imported recipes
  • grain kit sessions (if there are any)
This data will remain accessible to you only, unless you choose to share it with the community. This new feature serves as both an off-device backup and a means of ensuring any additional or new devices mirror the state of your brewing data.
