Where is this advice coming from chippy? It's not new information and afaik know not disuputed. Iirc, as we age, from about 40 we lose 10% muscle mass every decade. Lifting weights will stop and reverse this. Lifting weights also helps with bone density. As you probably know osteoporosis is a disease of old age and lifting weights can help with this.
 
You don't have to lift weights to restrict the effects of getting old, although clearly you will never stop it. There's plenty of stuff you can do, especially, believe it or not, when you eventually retire. The main objective is to keep active in some way or another, preferably pushing yourself a little. As soon as you give up or spend more time on your backside through choice or circumstance rather than moving about you are on the slippery slope. Also the older you get the more difficult it is to recover should you change your mind about your lifestyle. And as you get older there is a tendency for many to gain weight and the more weight you gain the more disinclined you become to do active stuff especially if the other signs of ageing kick in like dodgy knees or hips etc etc, although answer to that is to eat and drink sensibly which really isn't too difficult.
 
Actually this is one that I totally agree with. Everyone should do some sort of resistance training, not only will you look better but you'll feel better, both physically and mentally.
 
I'm a big advocate of doing some exercise, both resistance and cardio. Little and often is fairly easy to fit into most people's schedules, and if you are really unfit, try walking as your cardio bit. Or a spot of cycling. Keeping on top of your weight is much easier if your stay active. In my case, it also helps with my head - I can come home from work with a brain buzzing with issues with projects; do some lifting or running / cycling, and it's gone.

It was mentioned this morning on the news as if it was something new as you say lifting weights or any kind of exercise is good for a everyone whatever age, I guess it's a slow or no news day.

I think you have to do both cardio and resistance/weight training at whatever level to stay fit and avoid injury. However, doing just one or the other is better than nothing. Bodies age, breakdown and die but that's no reason not to keep them at their relative best so that other important things in life can be more enjoyable.

I've exercised my whole life and consider it a hobby.
 
I liked the bit that says you get almost half the benefit of being an athlete or sportsman, by doing 100 minutes of exercise per week. That's a massive health boost over a sedentary lifestyle.

I have step counter on my personal phone and work phone and when on shift I would average between 14k to 18k inside the factory over 12 hrs and would maybe go for a walk a few times a week when off shift.
I remember working on building sites and I couldn't put weight on due to the strenuous activity but did it keep you fit.
It's ironic as we were chatting about retirement though still 20 years away and noticed how many people actually pass away within a few short years after giving up work.I for one have always kept busy but don't go to the gym but would still be fairly fit to an extent.
 
Good idea, some of us do that as part of work .Some of walk a lot, some of us have desk job. Obesity and overweight are more prominent signs of our increase slowdown in mobility. Looking at European towns and cities I don't see so many people with weight problems as we have here, not mentioning the US.
Is it our lack of exercise or maybe our love for take away food?
Anyway, this is good advice !
 
I don't think walking in a factory counts as vigorous exercise!
Believe me when your wearing work attire,safety boots,goggles,and have to wear an oversuit with overboots,hairnet and mask in a Fab that is at a constant 20.5° all year round and then have to work on various machines it can be very exhausting over a 12 hour shift days and night's.

Its more our bAd diet than lack of exercise. Exercise is extremely good for overall health but burns surprisingly low calories. Running a whole marathon only burns about 2500 calories. I could burn the same amount of calories by fasting for 24 hours and going for a walk
