I had tomorrow booked off in any case as we have friends round over the weekend, so was going to use the day to sort the house out, defrost and brine the turkey etc... then I thought "If I work hard this week, I could get everything sorted by thursday evening and make a porter on friday instead!"

So here I am with the house spick and span and a gratuitously large-breasted bird sitting frigid on my kitchen table (plus ca change).

For 23l

3.5kg MO
1kg oats
300g crystal
300g chocolate malt
100g black malt

SO4 beasties

90min mash
90min boil, though I might shorten this if its too cold to keep the kitchen windows open tomorrow......

I dont know how to hop a porter really.... I have 50g of bramling x left over in the freezer, plus an assortment of fuggles, goldings, pacific gem and a couple of others...

I'm open to suggestions here. Should I go for a light touch or hop the snot out of it like I normally do with pale beers?

My porter I did had 50grms for 60 mins of golding and 15 grm of fuggles steeped at 80c.
It's a nice balanced pint , the hops don't push through much but they are in the taste.
Your choice as to what you hop with with though.

OK, mash on! :thumb:

Problems - my camera is out of action so no brew porn from me :(

Also, I'd stored my mash tun in the garage so it was very cold. Result - my 80c hot liqour soon turned into 70c mash liqour which gave me a 60c mash.... so I poured 2l more hot liqour in.... 62c.... boiled a kettle and this brought it close enough to 66 as makes no difference.

Hopefully this extra liqour wont spoil my beer

No the extra mash liquor won't hurt jonewer :thumb:
I hope the rest of the brew goes well :thumb:

Just need to pitch and clean up now.

Not too bad really, 1.045. Better than the rest of my day, the chest freezer I ordered wasnt delivered and my car's electrical system has had a nervous breakdown. Plus the cat is scared of the snow and wont go outside, so it keeps trying to take a waz in the kitchen!

Have a trub shot on the way..... somewhere...

Finished by 2pm, started around 7am. Not too shabby.

One thing I noticed when cleaning up was some big chunks of gelatinous trub at the bottom of the boiler. I'm guessing this is protafloc that didnt disperse. Hopefully there'll be enough to clear it though.

Hope it turns our great, i've not brewed a porter for ages, in fact....i've not brewed for ages!

Havent got round to the bread yet, but had a sneaky half pint last night (I suppose its technically a mild at this point) and was absolutely bowled over by it!

It was better than I could have hoped for. I gave a taste to my sister and brother in law and they quite liked it, even though they normally drink lager and dont like dark beers.....

The wife actually liked it and she doesnt like beer at all!

So all in all, very chuffed with this brew.

Down to 1011... kegged and conditioning.

Will try and make some bread with the leftover yeast!

I too make bread, but never tried it with brewing yeast as thought it wouldn't work correctly?? :?:
Anyone?
Yep yeast from the end of fermentation works really well for bread making :D
