Hello gents... Just wondering if anyone is also into baking as well as homebrewing.

I know its not the most manliest of all subjects but being a fat guy i tend to like sweet food so a few years ago i thought why not give it a go... now i bake a few times per week. Here are some pics

If any of you guys like baking it would be good to see some pictures and share some recipes.

there is a bread making thread in the forum which is popular.

They all look very good :thumb:

making me hungry again

well done

I like baking too, but i like baking pies and quiches (etc) i also bake bread but im not very good at it.
I have just got a Kenwood food processor and it is great at making pastry, it really takes out all the faffing.
I do bake cakes with the girls on odd occations and have attempted to bake buns but for some reason they never seem to rise enough so i don't bother now.
Like you i really like my food too and making something tastey from nothing more than what is needed (no E numbers, preservatives etc) give me real feeling of satisfaction.

I have a couple of pics of one of my pies that i baked but can't put it on at the moment.

You're kidding, thats only put around by skinny buggers who can't even make a bacon butty

I count cooking/baking amongst my hobbies, in fact since I retired (and MrsC still works :D ) I make all the meals during the week, that way I get what I fancy as well ;)

So as well as brewing, fishing & ornithology (not a bad combo :D ) you could certainly class cooking/baking amongst my hobbies :thumb:

I've never really baked anything in my life, I love cooking but not really tried baking, that is until a couple weeks ago when I went to visit my brother for the weekend and was given the honour of entertaining my 11 year old neice for the day...she was all "lets bake something" so cook book out we went on a bake-a-thon! We made chocolate and walnut brownies, chocolate chip cookies and a sponge cake! Not the most complicated of recipes I know but I must say I had a really great time and the finished products were bloody tasty! I think I need to bake more as I really enjoyed it :thumb:

Baking is ace! Cooking is also ace...

And this is the time of year to bake and make to excess!!!

I've got Christmas Puddings that have been maturing for a month already, the Christmas cake got made on Sunday, then there will be mince pies (shop bought mince pies are simply horrid, no matter how much you pay for them), tablet (google it if you're not of Scots descent...), whisky slab cake for distribution round all the old dears before Christmas and a whole host of other festive goodies.

I think that home made food is the best show of hospitality, whether beer or wine, or dinner, lunch or elevenses, or a gift when invited to a friends house. And on the other side of that coin I love it when friends come round with a big gooey cake...

Cakes and ale. Oh yes!

EDIT: Last year's Christmas Cake...

EDIT: Oh, and the "hairy biker" sideboard pie. Best way to use your leftover turkey and christmas ham...

I bake bread and it was whilst i was with my kids the other day that I realised the symbolic importance of baking bread, its the sharing, the joy on my kids face when I cut into a loaf, you just don't get that with a loaf of warbatons. .

I intend to bake and cook more It makes me feel a whole lot better.

I cannot agree with this enough. It's not a question of how beautiful the result is (although sometimes it's nice to do the spectacular), it's not about getting the recipe perfect (although its awesome when that happens) and it's not about any snobbery about food.

The act of creating something tasty and wholesome and fresh and sharing that with family and friends is such a deep, ancient pleasure there is very little else I've encountered in life that gives the same degree of satisfaction. It also connects us better with our food, something that is sadly lacking in our society.

For me, the best feeling is to have fed and watered friends and family with honest, home made food and drink and to see them struggle with that last spoonful of pudding, but not give up, sit back clearly stuffed, satisfied and happy.

I guess the brewing just plays to that same innate sense of hospitality...

Calumscott youve hit the nail bang on the head!!! Its great to hear that other people think the same as i do :grin::grin:

+1! although the hardest person I find to please is myself :!:
as Winter is nearly upon us and my mind is turning to the oncoming ski season
have a try at this recipe for a French dish called Tartiflette from the Haute Savoir region;

http://www.cuisine-french.com/cgi/mdc/l/en/recette/tartiflette.html

its a family favourite , perfect after a hard day on the slopes or a cold day in your garage Brewery ;)

Cooking and baking is class. To be able to do it is manly and a great thing to be able to do especially with kids.
It's good to be able to pass it on as well.

I'm slowly but surely building up decent baking, bread making and cooking equipment learning as I go along.
My bread isn't to bad but could be better.

That monster chocolate cake looks absolutely deliciously scrumptious.

Thanks Phil. I came across it by mistake... i was meant to be making a blackforrest gateau but it messed up and i came up with this beast. Im really glad i made the mistakes as i make this a few times per month. Here is what it looks like uncut
