My first ever brew went pretty well with a Bulldog kit so I thought I'd get another. I got an Evil Dog Double IPA kit not realising the ABV of 7.5% which is higher than I'd like.

If I were to top it up to 33l in total instead of 23l (10l dilution) what would the consequences be (apart from lower ABV)? Would I need extra yeast?

I can't seen to find any posts specifically covering over dilution.

Thanks

You'll still have the same amount of fermentables in the batch, so I'd suggest you won't need any extra yeast.

I'd guess if the target's 7.5%, you're probably looking at an O.G. of around 1.070. Adding 10l will get this down to around 1.050 (final ABV around 5%)

By diluting you'll also reduce the colour (lighter).

You will also reduce the IBUs (i.e. less bitterness or "hoppyness") but I'd suggest this will be complimentary to the reduced O.G. and you'll end up with a lighter coloured, pale ale.
